Braun walks back comments that interracial marriage ruling should have been left to states

Source: Indianapolis Star

Sen. Mike Braun said during a media call Tuesday that the U.S. Supreme Court was wrong to legalize interracial marriage decades ago.

That decision should have been left to individual states, he said.

Five hours later, Braun released a statement saying he misunderstood "a line of questioning," and emphasized that he condemns racism "in any form."

During the press call earlier Tuesday, Braun was asked about the landmark Loving v. Virginia court case after he explained he thought abortion rights questions should have been left up to the states back when Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. Mandating abortion access was judicial activism, Braun said, adding that individual states should instead be able to decide how restrictive abortion access should be.

Meaning Presidency, and both houses, expect that all the progress we've made toward social justice is going to be shot to hell and given back to the states. These people do NOT believe in a Federal Government. They hold to the Articles of Confederation... NOT to the Constitution!

That means no Interracial marriages; no contraception; no abortion; no gay rights; no women's rights to hold property, make contract, or work in any environment that might harm them "should they become pregnant.

People, it's the 1950's they're headed back towards, as far as civil rights are concerned.

I thoroughly expect them to roll back ALL voting rights laws, as well.

They'll also tear down the complete New Deal. They've wanted this for years. That means cancelling Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. I have no idea how they expect those of us who lost so much during the Bush years to make it. But maybe that's the point... just hurry up and die. You're not worth anything, anyway.

I'm so close to hoping a country will give elders, women, and minorities asylum from this country when it comes to that point. And it IS coming unless Democrats stop trying to be damned nice and "fair" and acting like the Normal Rule is the status quo. Get real and get some heavy work done!!!

We need to prove, as Democrats, that we can walk and chew gum at the same time. I know we've got multiple crisis going on, and Biden's doing a pretty damned good job as far as I'm concerned. I wanted Elizabeth Warren for Prez, so that's an unbiased opinion. But we've GOT to start doing something major to help Ukraine and put Putin in his place, nukes be damned. This is even more evident with his new shelling from the sea. We can't let him commit genocide to one of our "friendly" countries. This makes us appear too weak, and coming on the hills of the reputation we got left with after Trump, it really DOES make us look weak. I don't want to get into a proxy war with Russia, but it may come to that if we want to retain any sense of democracy in the U.S. and in the European theatre.

We, as Democrats, have to show our patriotism and support for Democracy and the Rule of Law by cracking down on these domestic terrorists. No more of these trucker convoys running roughshod over the city population. Protest is one thing... that's done in the Peoples park across from the White House. Every single one of those trucks... big and small... need to be pulled over by cops several times a day by different cops, and searched just like the vehicles are searched going into a military post. I don't doubt one of them will eventually pull a Timothy McVeigh if we let it go on like this. They're getting away with way too much.

Domestic Terrorism must become a law. And it should apply to the neo-Nazis as well as the Proud Boys and the Incels, and all the other autocratic terror groups. What they do is not protest; they are threatening. That's terrorism, and they should be arrested under a law that spells that out. If we can do it for Muslim immigrants, we can do it for the millions of home-grown terrorists.

The Democrats should also not stop until they have produced a new New Deal for the people. Single payer healthcare; student loan forgiveness; increase in entitlement programs. BTW... that word "entitlement" is NOT a dirty word and we need to reclaim it for the meaning it actually has. I'm on social security. It does NOT keep up with inflation in any way or form. But I've payed into that fund since I was 16 years old. I'm 66 now. I'm entitled to that money. It's not "freebie." I paid into it; it's a damned insurance fund, not a bucket of money that's a pot of gold for the damned elites to gamble away on the stock market.

If we could do these correctly, and get a hell of a lot smarter on messaging and have OUR representatives speak up loudly and often, we might have a fighting chance to not only retain democracy, but make the Republican party go the way of the Whigs, from which it originated.

We have GOT to find a way to vote and make sure our votes count in 22 and 24, or we are so f**ked, there'll be no country for us. Like Putin, the R's will pen us in and silence us anyway they could - just like Putin does with his stormtroopers, kangaroo courts, and secret poisonings. More of us will die of hunger in the richest world in the nation - young and old. The 1950's were not good times. As a woman, I sure as hell don't want to go back there; and as a old fart, doubly so.

...that Republicans were against abortion EXCEPT in cases of rape, incest, of the life of the mother. Not anymore. Today's GQP not only publicly want ALL abortions banned, they also want to ban all contraceptives.

Banning interacial marriage, like banning being gay or trans or 'other' is right around the corner. Braun is only showing us the direction the GQP is going.

Coming soon, separate but unequal water fountains, bathrooms, etc.

There are no 'good' Republicans.

This has been coming for a long time now. Republicans had a goal, played the long game and they won. The Supreme Court. Meanwhile the country naively rocked along thinking that could NEVER happen here. Well, it did, and it's here. Watching the Jackson hearing, the game is still being played using the rules of "civil decorum", as if it even exists anymore. Where has that got us so far? Why is no one stating the obvious when responding to the R's asinine questions such as "the states should be able to decide "traditional" marriage because it's a religious issue. Well no, it's not. As soon as the Government got involved in marriage, divorces, having to apply for marriage licenses, family courts deciding custody, tax laws etc., it became a GOVERNMENT issue. Give them marriage. Use civil unions for govt. purposes. If you don't have a legal civil union, you get no government benefits from your "Marriage". See the Netherlands to see how it's done. And no, gay marriage is NOT infringing on religious beliefs. Don't like gay marriage, don't marry someone of the same sex. It's just that simple. Religion doesn't trump the right of ALL citizens. Yet we all watch as it's tap danced around as to not offend anyone while the r's go on unhinged rants and undo more and more and more. It's pretty plain, the civil war never ended and the puritans are back in full force. All this states rights bullshit is nothing more than the never ending butt hurt of the confederates that STILL exist today. We're already seeing the burning of books, next up, witch trials!

38. Alabama Anyone?
Sun May 8, 2022, 11:09 AM
May 2022

Leave it to the states? Until a 2000 voter referendum in Alabama their state constitution had this little gem…

“Miscegenation laws. The legislature shall never pass any law to authorize or legalize any marriage between any white person and a negro, or descendant of a negro"

The vote was 59% yes and 41% no to remove it. 25 of the 67 counties in Alabama voted NO. Racism is alive and well in parts of America as is homophobia. To put basic human rights up to popular vote is an affront to the concept of liberty and equality. We’re not talking about voting for a tax increase or a new city school. We’re talking about peoples lives. America is supposed to be the land of opportunity… to deny that opportunity based on who someone IS and has no control over isn’t in the spirit of America.
