Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity, which plans to direct the funds toward boosting affordable housing and Black homeownership, the group said on Tuesday.
The contribution, the latest in a string of donations by Scott totaling nearly $9 billion since 2019, will be divided between Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates.
It will be used to accelerate Habitat for Humanity's efforts to promote homeownership in Black and minority communities, Natosha Reid Rice, Habitat's chief global diversity, equity and inclusion officer, said in a press release.
"We look forward to bringing diverse groups of people together to focus on the ways we can address systemic racism and injustices in the housing sector that continue to limit access and harm people of color," she said.

(9,008 posts)there are so many needy charities and worthwhile groups that need financial help. I get tired of all the appeals. It'd be great fun to spread several billion around here and there.

(2,355 posts)Our brains just don't work that way. That's why people don't really get resentful when you start talking about all the wealth hoarding by billionaires and millionaires. We have to start putting the numbers in terms that people can understand. For example, 1 million seconds is about 11 days. 1 billion seconds is about 31.5 years. The difference is staggering...
Mitt Romney's money, which last I heard, totaled around $330 million, would equate to around 10.5 years (31.5 divided by 3).
Elon Musk, who's worth $162 billion? That equates to 5103 years (162 x 31.5). That's still a number that the human brain doesn't work well with. Once you get past a couple hundred and the numbers become really abstract...

(29,204 posts)in my job (for the last 30 years), I work with very large numbers... very large data storage numbers.
Megabytes, Gigabytes, Terabytes, Petabytes, Exabytes.
Each is 3 orders of magnitude (approximately) larger than the previous.
So when someone asks me about creating a copy of the 10TB database... and they start talking MB/sec transfer rate (I don't really care what the number is, I automatically know we have a problem).

(16,179 posts)A lot of the land is donated, and materials as well are often donated or discounted. A lot of the labor is volunteer.
Many years ago they were building houses in Florida for $25,000 to $30,000 if I recall correctly.. now it says $50K-$80K is more typical.
Paid back by families with zero interest over 30 years, so gift keeps on giving.
