German minister says further Strela missiles are on way to Ukraine

BERLIN, March 23 (Reuters) - German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Wednesday that after delays in deliveries, further supplies of Strela missiles, which had been in the inventories of the former Communist East German army, were on the way to Ukraine.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine prompted Germany to stage a historic reversal of its policy of not sending weapons to conflict zones, but the Ukrainian government has been frustrated by delays.
"I can clearly say that further Strela deliveries are on the way," Baerbock told the Bundestag lower house of parliament.
"We are one of the biggest weapons suppliers in this situation, it doesn't make us proud but it's what we must do to help Ukraine," she added.

It is designed to target aircraft at low altitudes with passive infrared homing guidance and destroy them with a high explosive warhead.
Broadly comparable in performance with the US Army FIM-43 Redeye, the Strela-2 was the first Soviet man-portable SAM it entered use in 1968,[citation needed] and full-scale production began in 1970.[4] While the Redeye and 9K32 Strela-2 were similar, the missiles weren't identical. Nonetheless, the CIA concluded that the Soviet SA-7 had benefited from the Redeye's development.[5]
The Strela-2 was a staple of the Cold War and was produced in huge numbers for the Soviet Union and their allies, as well as revolutionary movements.[6] Though since surpassed by more modern systems, the Strela and its variants remain in service in many countries, and have seen widespread use in nearly every regional conflict since 1972.

air defense missile system (MANPADS) developed in the Soviet Union as a response to the poor performance of the
earlier 9K32 Strela-2 (SA-7 Grail) system. The missile was largely based on the earlier Strela 2, and thus
development proceeded rapidly. The new weapon was accepted into service in the Soviet Army in January 1974.
