US determines Russia has committed war crimes in Ukraine
Source: The Hill
Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday said the Biden administration has determined Russian forces have committed war crimes in Ukraine.
"Our assessment is based on a careful review of available information from public and intelligence sources. As with any alleged crime, a court of law with jurisdiction over the crime is ultimately responsible for determining criminal guilt in specific cases," Blinken said in a statement.
"The U.S. government will continue to track reports of war crimes and will share information we gather with allies, partners, and international institutions and organizations, as appropriate. We are committed to pursuing accountability using every tool available, including criminal prosecutions," Blinken added.

(5,702 posts)One of the main reasons why the United States has opposed signing and ratifying the Rome Statute is because after signing, the International Criminal Court would be able to hold United States military and political leaders to the global standard of justice. This means that the United States would not be able to protect both its military and political leaders that have committed crimes against humanity, like knowingly killing innocents in the crossfire.

Basically, the U.S. has a do as we say, not as we do attitude to war crimes, I guess.

I believe we still use cluster munitions, which are considered criminal.

(16,632 posts)Makes people feel good maybe but Russia has been doing this for years and nothing has ever been done about it that has any impact on the higher ups. A few sanctions that hurt the people mostly and does nothing to change the actions of putin and the rest of his cronies...
Pretty much the same as what we do about our elected criminals...

(4,416 posts)Is We have video, and evidence galore.
BUT - the USA is NOT a signatory to the International Criminal Court. And therefore we cannot file a case.
BUT- we have the goods, and will share with any nation who IS a member-signatory nation, and if you ask, we will share and show you. Allies given preference. NATO Allies are especially welcome to ask through, and around, all channels.
(That is what that means)

I get it: Putin has nuclear weapons. As do we. I understand the fear, but we cannot live in a world where a leader of a country can engage in the worse of human behavior because they have a nuclear weapon. I don't know if Putin is willing to have the world, including his country and his family, effectively ended, but I would bet against it. We cannot continue to give him to room to believe he can even use even the smallest of nuclear weapons. NATO needs to make it clear the use of nuclear weapons on any country in Europe will be met with NATO intervention. Let Putin know such as act will guarantee World War III. It sounds terrible, but we have to remove this gun from OUR heads, because it's not just Ukraine, and it's not just Europe, and it's not just NATO in danger.
NATO needs to say it now because if they don't, they will have to say it later, and whatever is the outcome now will be the same outcome we'll get then.
