NATO: 7,000 to 15,000 Russian troops dead in Ukraine

Source: AP

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — NATO estimated on Wednesday that 7,000 to 15,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in four weeks of war in Ukraine, where fierce fighting by the country’s fast-moving defenders has denied Moscow the lightning victory it sought.

By way of comparison, Russia lost about 15,000 troops in Afghanistan over 10 years.

A senior NATO military official said the alliance’s estimate was based on information from Ukrainian officials, what Russia has released — intentionally or not — and intelligence gathered from open sources. The official spoke on condition of anonymity under ground rules set by NATO.

When Russia unleashed its invasion Feb. 24 in Europe’s biggest offensive since World War II, a swift toppling of Ukraine’s government seemed likely. But with Wednesday marking four full weeks of fighting, Moscow is bogged down in a grinding military campaign.

4. If is 10,000 then since each death usually has 2 or 3 other wounded, that's 30,000 out of action

30 k out 150 k or 200 k (max) is a huge cut. And they haven't gotten them out yet either. There is more to come.

In Iraq, US had 4200 deaths (3400 hostile, 800 non-hostile) and 31,000 troops wounded in action. Using those figures:
31,000 / 4200 = 7.4

At 7 WI per death, that would be 49,000 to 105,000 wounded. That does not seem possible. But a big difference is that the US troops took much MUCH better care of their wounded and many MANY more lived than would have in a Russian military. So a ratio of 2 or 3 seems reasonable.

A senior NATO military officer says the alliance estimates that Russia has suffered between 30,000 and 40,000 battlefield casualties in Ukraine through the first month of the war, including between 7,000 and 15,000 killed. It is NATO’s first public estimate of Russian casualties since the war started Feb. 24.

Casualties include the dead. But it is a very inexact estimate, 3 : 1 ratio:

The NATO military officer, in a briefing from the alliance’s military headquarters in Belgium on Wednesday, said the estimate of 30,000 to 40,000 Russian casualties is derived from what he called a standard calculation that in war an army suffers three wounded soldiers for every soldier killed. The casualties include killed in action and wounded in action, as well as those taken prisoner or missing in action, the officer said.

3 WIA + 1 KIA = 4 casualties

7k dead x 4 = 28K casualties
15k dead x 4 = 60K casualties

60,000 out of action is hard to believe, so I guess they trimmed it back to 40k.

The max invasion force is 200k, though some estimates say 150k committed. Russia can't sustain such losses much longer.

5. One comparison: US averaged 6600 dead/month in WW2

Averaged just under that at 5800 dead/month in WW1

US deaths during Civil War averaged 15000/month (which to date, still holds several notorious records).

in a short amount of time. I wonder what the Ukraine death total is. Last I looked the UKR army and militia's have lost about 14,000 since the russian incursions around Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts of Ukraine, aka Donbas since 2014...

that embracing authoritarianism and turning over the power of governance to a small cadre of fascists might lead to seeing THEIR sons and daughters conscripted--on an unprecedented scale--into a war machine. To say nothing of seeing their taxes go on steroids upwards to the oligarchy.

Not that the U.S. hasn't drafted unwilling participants into war before, or that taxation hasn't been corrupted in this country as the oligarchs have bought large chunks of the U.S. government, but the scale of diversion of resources would become a gushing river.

I guess as long as they get racism and to subjugate women, it would be worth it?

In their minds, they are the master race. When the revolution comes, they will be the ones in power. The fundies are programmed for that from the outset - they are the saved ones, the blessed ones, on Earth as in Heaven. The conspiracy theorists are pretty much convinced that not only will they discover the truth, but they will be rewarded for decoding the secret cereal ring. The White Supremacists will of course have their own personal plantations and harems and all of the Gestapo boots they can get their hands on.

Historically, life was not much better for the white sharecropper even before the Civil War than it was for the slaves, but no one today ever thinks about that. The Far Right has never been about introspection; I'm not sure they are even able to think through consequences beyond the most immediate.
