MacKenzie Scott makes record $275 million donation to Planned Parenthood
Source: NBC News
Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $275 million to womens healthcare provider Planned Parenthood, the largest gift from a single donor in the organizations more than 100-year history, Planned Parenthood said on Wednesday.
The donation, which is part of Scotts pledge to give away the majority of her wealth, was made to Planned Parenthoods national office and 21 regional affiliates.
Scott, who is now married to Dan Jewett, a Seattle science teacher, received a 4 percent stake in Amazon.com Inc as part of her divorce from Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos.
Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions and other healthcare services at its clinics around the country, is at the forefront of the political battle over abortion rights playing out in state legislatures and courts.

(2,023 posts)If I had that kind of money, I would be doing the same kinds of things. The story said she's currently worth about $49 billion. Who the hell needs that much money? If I had that kind of money, I would set aside about five or ten million just for myself, which would be enough for me live on VERY comfortably for the rest of my life, and I might add that I would set it aside in several very safe and well hidden locations, and then I would go about the business of giving the rest of it away. I would use it to make a lot of deserving people's lives MUCH better.
And yes, Planned Parenthood would be one of the beneficiaries of my generosity.
One complaint about this story: I wish people would not identify Planned Parenthood as a "women's healthcare provider" because it's not exactly true. They provide healthcare to men, too. Their motto and statement of purpose used to be gender-neutral: "Every child a wanted child." That might still be their motto, although I haven't heard it in a long time. Somebody who can speak for Planned Parenthood, please comment on this.
I have used their services (I'm a 72-year-old man) and I have donated money to them. I drive by the local Planned Parenthood almost every day, and there are usually two or three or four or more protesters camped on the sidewalk in the front, and every time I drive by there, I want to go in and donate $100 (a lot of money for me) -- and tell the protesters that I'm going in there to do that, and that the reason I'm doing it is because they're there.

I give what little $ I can spare to PP and the ACLU.

(10,154 posts)That Texas forced birth law means it's open season on all people who donate to abortion providers.
Not that being sued for $20,000 would bother her any. And she could get a ton of lawyers to keep them in litagation for decades. Will anyone have the guts to do it?

(1,685 posts)To see someone do good with her life. As we know many Democrats operate that way and the other party of course is all about themselves and hell with everybody else. Ive been a lifelong democrat because I figured out early on Democrats help others and Republicans help themselves.

(23,338 posts)Great for PP, they need money for legal/political actions as well as for the actual health services they provide.
But it makes my paltry donations seem insignificant, even to me.
Too bad I'm not rich. I'd do some great philanthropy. Me and George Costanza.
