Trump lawyer urges court to block House from getting tax returns

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Former President Donald Trump's lawyers brought his years-long battle to keep his tax returns out of the public eye to a U.S. appeals court on Thursday, where a congressional committee argued it had the right to force their release.
The tax-writing House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee asserted to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit that it has the power to obtain the former president's tax returns from the Internal Revenue Service, part of the Treasury Department.
Senior Judge David Sentelle, a conservative jurist, expressed skepticism's of Trump's arguments during the hearing.

"You're pleading may not carry the ball for you because there may be a legislative actor who has two purposes," Sentelle said. "You allege they have one. And I'm asking you: why isn't it possible they have two?"

(2,347 posts)Trying to run out the clock until November, in the hopes that the Greed Over People (or perhaps Gropers Of Putin) assholes take back the House. If they do, then the tax thing goes away...at least as far as any House investigation is concerned. The DOJ and NYAG offices are another matter, however.
Alvin Bragg in the Manhattan DA's office has apparently dropped the fucking ball, in spite/despite his campaign pledge.🙄

(7,413 posts)but in this instance it is really fearful to do so.
This was per Glenn Kessler who worked there for 25 years.
I wish Marc Pomerance was the head of it instead of Walter Mitty.

(1,121 posts)It always amazed me how the media always seemed to just accept his statements that he couldn't disclose his tax returns because they were under "audit." They never pushed him to at least provide the correspondence regarding any such audit, nor the reason why decades of returns were still allegedly being "audited" especially when the IRS generally only contacts audits of the past 3 years of filed returns or 6 years of returns if they discover potential criminal acts. I believe the only exception is for a RICO investigation. Just more BS spewed from the Orange Anus.

(31,981 posts)IRS audits of individuals are at their lowest level in more than a decade. But for two people in the United States, their chance of being audited is 100%.
For the U.S. president and vice president, an audit is guaranteed every year.
The practice of doing a "mandatory examination" of the presidential and vice presidential tax returns has been in the Internal Revenue Manual since the Watergate era, according to the IRS.

(1,121 posts)and your response is not germane to my original posting. The auditing of tax returns relate only to the years while serving as President/Vice President. As had been the tradition of his contemporaries, Traitor Don refused to supply any returns prior to the years that he occupied our White House, providing only self produced "financial summaries" of more recent years, and alleging that decades worth of tax returns were under "audit."

(1,121 posts)and they only received the summary data from the IRS, not the actual tax returns with the supporting documents. Once again, he supplied absolutely nothing and this the reason that the House investigators have continued their efforts to procure the returns that were filed in his name.
