Ukraine tells the US it needs 500 Javelins and 500 Stingers per day
Source: CNN
(CNN) Ukraine has updated its extensive wishlist of additional military assistance from the US government in the past several days to include hundreds more anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles than previously requested, according to a document provided to CNN that details the items needed.
The Ukrainians have submitted similar lists in recent weeks but a recent request provided to US lawmakers appears to reflect a growing need for American-made Stinger anti-aircraft missiles and Javelin anti-tank missiles -- with Ukraine saying it urgently needs 500 of each, daily.
In both cases, Ukraine is asking for hundreds more missiles than were included in a similar list recently provided to US lawmakers, according to a source with knowledge of both requests.
The new list comes as the Ukrainians have claimed they face potential weapons shortages amid an ongoing Russian assault -- prompting some pushback from US and NATO officials who stress that more military aid is already going into the country.

(30,613 posts)It is a service well worth paying for.
Every tank, troop, plane, or ship they destroy is one that we will never face in battle.

(50,451 posts)Would it also be possible to send them some Avengers? An Avenger is a truck with eight Stinger tubes mounted on it.

(1,568 posts)Just seems like a larger target firing the same missiles, right?
I wonder if they could get some medium range NASAMS to them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NASAMS
Also, maybe flood Ukraine with a bunch of bullshit decoy S300 equipment that emit similar heat and electronic signatures to the real ones. Emulate the S300 radar and just have Russia waste their missiles on those, and give cover to bring in the system from Slovakia. Not sure how plausible that is, but stuff like that worked in the past.

(50,451 posts)First, a shoulder fired Stinger gunner has to reload after every shot. Avenger gunners have eight missiles ready to fire.
Second, the Avenger gunner is in a compartment thats armored against small arms fire. Stinger gunners are not.
Third, the Avenger is a much more stable firing platform.
And because the Avenger is on a vehicle, you can move from place to place faster.
Avengers are very easy to use. Boeing makes them in Seattle, so the closest Army base to get troops for operational testing is Fort Lewis. They took three soldiers who werent air defense artillery troops and one Avenger to Yakima Firing Center to have them test fire it. All three managed to score hits.

(1,568 posts)That would make somewhat similar than the Osa and Strela-10s, aye? I wonder if they will ever send them some systems with a bit more range. I'm guessing those would all require further training if they are not soviet/russian stuff.

(50,451 posts)The NATO reporting name is SA-13. The Avenger is very close to that system, except the SA-13 has a radar and only 4 launch tubes.

(1,568 posts)But also with the ability to match heat and electronic signatures. I'd say make them mobile and remotely controlled. Apparently Ukraine already has some inflatable S-300 systems. I don't know if those mimic heat and electromagnetic signals of the real ones, though.

(23,283 posts)If they could fire 500 stingers and bring down 10 Russian planes, it would be a bargain. if they can do it every day, the war wouldn't go on much longer.
Javelin anti-tank missiles are way more costly.

(10,531 posts)@ $250,000 per Javelin and $120,000 per Stinger that's $185 million a day, $5.5 billion a month and I dounbt we have the stocks to provide 15,000 of each per month.

(10,035 posts)Publicly available information shows that, since its introduction in 1996, only 45,000 Javelin missiles and 12,000 launch units have been produced. Over a year Ukraine is asking for 182,500 Javelins? Also, when this war is over where do all of unused weapons end up? Let's not forget the Stingers we gave to the Mujahideen.
