Foo Fighters Drummer Taylor Hawkins Dead at 50

Source: Rolling Stone

Taylor Hawkins, the jovial, ferocious drummer for Foo Fighters, has died at the age of 50, according to a statement from the band.

“The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins,” read the message, which was posted to social media. “His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with all of us forever.” Foo Fighters are currently on tour in South America and were preparing to perform at Festival Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá, Colombia, a rep for the band told Rolling Stone.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Hawkins relocated to Southern California with his family in his early childhood. He first rose to prominence as the touring drummer for Alanis Morissette during the Jagged Little Pill era. “The second I heard ‘You Oughta Know,’ I was like, ‘I’m in that band!'” Hawkins told Rolling Stone in November 2021. “I just knew.” Hawkins also appeared in the music videos for the singer’s hit singles “You Oughta Know” and “You Learn.”

After inter-studio conflict led to the departure of Foo Fighters’ original drummer William Goldsmith during recording sessions for the group’s breakthrough album The Colour and the Shape, forcing frontman Dave Grohl to handle drumming duties, Hawkins officially joined the band in the spring of 1997. Throughout his career with Foo Fighters, Hawkins occasionally handled vocal duties, singing lead on the group’s 2005 single “Cold Day in the Sun” and “Sunday Rain” from 2017’s Concrete and Gold.

Watching Taylor here made me cry, and I’m a grown ass man. I’m going to miss him and his passionate drumming. I’m broken right now. RIP Taylor.
I just learned acoustic versions of Times Like These and Everlong. I will dedicate them in my heart to him every time I play them.

I Remember Dave and the band once at the HOF event, either accepting or presenting, honoring those that are “Real” Rock and rollers. I was going to search Taylor drumming for Alanis, thank you. Still in a funk this morning after the news. I will be listening to the Foo Fighters exclusively as the dogs and I stomp up into the mountain forests today., RIP Taylor, heart felt vibes to Dave and the guys. Keep the beat pounding, for Taylor.

On tributes to FF today. Flipped over to MTV Live and they are rockin it with Foo Fighter videos. Guess the dogs and woods may be on hold until I savor all the Dave and Taylor I can get. Nobody does better music videos than Dave et al. My senior dog is named Trail Trekker Taylor and I own 5 Taylor guitars. When I Fantasize about being a Rock Star, it isn’t about a ripping guitarist, it is being Taylor on drums. But, being a Dave Grohl front man would be just fine.
Cheers to ya. Make it a good day.

Even though I live in Dave Grohl's birthplace,

I loved seeing Hawkins work his kit. He was exceptionally talented, and he was so influential I don't think the band will be the same.

I may not be a big fan of FF's music, but Dave Grohl is a class act. His docs are incredible and he's very humble to his fans. I got the same vibes from Hawkins. They showed up here to christen "Dave Grohl Alley" several years ago with a free small hometown concert at a local record store.

I'm saddened by the loss to family, the band, and the future of rock.

in Bogota. No cause of death yet.

Taylor Hawkins' death may be drug related, according to Colombian police.

The 50-year-old Foo Fighters drummer died in a hotel room at the Casa Medina in the north of the country’s capital Bogota.

The Metropolitan Police of Bogota, in a statement carried by several Colombian newspapers, said: “The cause of death has yet to be established. “According to those close to him, the death could be related to the consumption of drugs.”

Local reports in Colombia said hotel staff called the emergency services after Taylor complained of suffering chest pains.

He was already dead by the time medical responders arrived at his hotel room.

Heart attack ?

Most folks don't understand the life of the touring musician. During long tours, your normal activities, routines are gone. It's not pretty. It's not easy. Different city every day, hotel food (yeech), little time to exercise. Not a lot of down time to de-stress, relax, unwind. For some, being away from family is emotionally draining. Too many tours, back-to-back take a huge toll on the body. If your band records a great deal, you will be out there touring in support, making appearances, doing media interviews, sitting for print stories. It is a lot to take on. As you age, the whole process takes more and more out of you.

And then, a lot of musicians do not see doctors regularly, have annual check-ups, or even have adequate health insurance.

It's a rewarding career, but it's a tough life.

a few years back. Taylor and the lead singer of the band who opened for them sang a cover of "Under Pressure". It was great!

I remember his drum kit was on a platform that rose really high into the air. It was nuts.

So sad. He was a great drummer in my opinion, and seemed to have such a great time playing in that band. He certainly was fun to watch.

I know he survived an overdose before. But I guess it doesn't really matter. If you're gone it doesn't make a difference how you got there.

Condolences to his family, friends and fans. ❤

isn't a surprise. Taylor Hawkins was by all appearances sober, healthy and happy, so dropping dead at age 50 in the middle of a tour is an enormous shock.

I do wonder if Taylor was still a tobacco smoker. The risk of sudden cardiac death is far higher in smokers than non-smokers. Throw in the high altitude, and he may have just had a heart attack. I remember when Robert Palmer died suddenly of a heart attack at 54. He was a heavy smoker.

He wasn't that big of a guy, he would have these speakers in his backpack, playing music loudly, which was kind of obnoxious given, walking in the Las Virgenes Open Spaces, should be about the lack of noise.. He and I didn't get along, but he was popular in the neighborhood, and had many friends. RIP..
