Boston parking garage under construction partially collapses

Source: Associated Press

BOSTON — Several floors of a downtown Boston parking garage that was under construction collapsed Saturday evening, fire officials said. Officials did not immediately confirm whether there were any injuries.

The garage, located in the Haymarket area, came down after a crane on the top part of the structure collapsed on areas that were under construction, crews on scene told WCVB-TV.

The collapse caused multiple floors of the garage to fall, the television station reported.

Boston police officers, firefighters and emergency service personnel, and state police troopers all responded to assist.

Structures in that complex include Haymarket MBTA station with 2 subway tunnels.

The station's busway was temporarily closed for the demolition in January.

yet another tall glass skyscraper.

The worker killed may have driven his "heavy equipment" too close to the edge of one of the upper floors. It was Saturday evening and luckily there were few other workers on site apparently.

Wonder if this accident will affect the planned renovation of that infamous structure.

MBTA Green, Orange Line Service Temporarily Change After Government Center Parking Garage Collapse

By CBSBoston.com Staff March 28, 2022 at 8:23 am Filed Under:Boston News, Government Center, MBTA, Peter Monsini

BOSTON (CBS) — The MBTA says Green Line and Orange Line services will be suspended in the tunnels beneath the site of Saturday’s collapse at the Government Center Parking Garage. The accident killed 51-year-old demolition worker Peter Monsini.

The Orange Line will be suspended between North Station and Back Bay. Customers are encouraged to use the Green Line between Park and Copley or take the Commuter Rail from Ruggles or Back Bay to South Station. CharlieCards will be accepted.

The Green Line will be suspended between North Station and Government Center. Shuttle buses will take riders between those two destinations.

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said service on the Orange and Green line will be impacted for a while.

“It will last as long as it takes for us to ensure that the integrity of the tunnels are intact. We want to make sure that the system is absolutely. safe. Obviously, we’ve had a terrible tragedy occur. What happened is tons of debris have fallen onto the top of the tunnels. So first, we need to make sure the site is safe for staff to go in and actually inspect those tunnels. Then we need to make sure the tunnels are safe and then we will resume service,” he told WBZ-TV Monday.
