Mississippi lawmakers pass largest-ever state income tax cut

Source: Associated Press

JACKSON, Miss. -- Mississippi, one of the poorest states in the nation with perpetually underfunded schools and struggling rural hospitals, had its largest-ever tax cut passed by lawmakers Sunday.

The Republican-controlled state House and Senate voted by wide margins to pass a bill that would reduce the state income tax over four years, beginning in 2023. The bill goes to Republican Gov. Tate Reeves. He has indicated he will sign it into law.

"This affects every Mississippian that gets up and goes to work," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Josh Harkins, a Republican from Flowood, said Sunday.

Supporters say a significant tax cut could spur economic growth and attract new residents to Mississippi, which was one of three states that lost population during the decade before the 2020 Census.

Looks like Mississippi Republicans never learned the lesson that voodoo economics doesn't work, has never worked, will never work.

Guess they want to ensure that Mississippi wins the battle with West Virginia for poorest state in the country. Yeehaw!

Once those education cuts kick in, the kids will probably be calling the state Missippippi.

You have to spend money to attract new residents and new investment. You need good roads and good schools, good hospitals, good infrastructure. Ain't no one gonna go "If I move to Mississippi I'll spend all the money I save on taxes buying new shock absorbers, the newest high school math textbooks have a question that starts "a plumber makes a dollar a day" and the closest decent hospital is in Alabama, so I'm a-gonna move there!"

take care of their own citizens. Remember Trump complaining about NATO countries not paying their share of expenses to protect themselves. Same thing should go for states. Certain things ought to be paid for by the residents of states. If you keep building on flood planes, your state should pay for your catastrophe.

Why pay for yourselves when you can make someone else do it. Ever wonder why they're called "red" states? (Socialism/Communism symbolic color; hint, hint...nudge, nudge...say no more)

Would also be nice for states that hand out tax exemptions to "attract business" get a dollar for dollar reduction in federal monies.

crappy schools = crappy property values

The quality of your infrastructure drives industry

want to improve things in Mississippi, then they are going to have to spend some money. People don't just move into an area if there is nothing there, no decent schools, no active and proactive government body to push thru progressive agendas, or bring good paying jobs to the state, etc. As a fellow DUer said, another KS (Kansas) experiment. A doomed experiment.

because all their states are on federal welfare, and they just keep demanding more (paid for by blue states) while at the same belittling and bad mouthing all those blue states for, I don't fucking know, some buncha made up shit that doesn't matter and isn't true but makes them (the red states) feel real good about wallowing in the mud of their own ignorant fuckery.

Why do Republicans think people on welfare just want more and more? Because that's exactly what they (Republicans) do. So much projection.

I wish they'd be honest.

Republican: people on welfare will just keep demanding more while getting more and more lazy!

Human people: How do you know that?

Republican: Because that's exactly what we do! Also, all those libtards are pedophiles!

Human people: How do you know that?

Republicans: Because that's what we do, so they must, also!

They're not paying their fair share, and they expect the rest of us in the remaining 49 or so states to make up for it. It's like going on a date, dutch, and then one of you doesn't pay their fair share (at which point the smarter one of the two of you should leave).

I have never met nicer people than Mississippians. They waved to me as I drove down the road. The said good morning when I made eye contact. They were as hospitable as all get out. I left because the Jackson water company would send me letter almost monthly advising me the water exceed EPA standards for lead and copper content. I the potholes were scary. I saw potholes that could take out your axle within a few blocks of the governor's mansion. I saw abandoned blighted businesses and houses all over the city of Jackson. The water company itself is located in a semi abandoned shopping mall (it is like the only tenant). The mall looked like what you would expect on "The Walking Dead". The water lines are still screwed from the Valentine's 2021 freeze. The mayor cries because he can't replace the water system. THANK GOD GOVERNOR TATER-TOT GAVE A TAX CUT TO REDUCE FUNDING FOR STATE.
