'Historic moment' in Canada as Ontario strikes deal for $10-a-day childcare
Source: The Guardian
Canadas most populous province has signed a long-awaited deal with the federal government for subsidized childcare, paving the way for a nationwide plan that Justin Trudeau hailed as a historic moment.
Unveiling the plan on Monday, the prime minister pledged that fees will eventually drop to C$10 a day by 2026, but experts caution that the plan must reckon with the reality of chronic staff shortages, fierce demand for limited spaces and murky funding agreements.
Trudeau and Ontarios premier, Doug Ford, announced billions in funding for the province, part of a broader multibillion-dollar package offered to all provinces and territories.
Childcare is becoming a reality for all Canadians, said Trudeau.

(53,778 posts)Biden's BBB plan would've been way better, but of course republicans and Manchin and Sinema don't give a fuck.

(53,778 posts)BBB child care assistance covers the grants, contracts, and certificates needed to cover the full cost of providing high-quality child care, reflecting a capped family contribution. States cover 10% of these costs, and the federal government covers 90% of these costs. Quality and supply activities.

(25,857 posts)The cost of child care has always been large. Whether that's right or fair is open to discussion.
A good thirty years ago, at a company picnic, the wife of one of my husband's coworkers had just learned she was pregnant with their third child. She said that once the baby was born, the daycare cost for all three would be more than she earned. I said, Why don't you just stay home for a few years? And she looked at me as if I were speaking Martian.
I was a stay at home mom the entire time my sons were growing up. I'd never had a career, didn't have skills beyond the basics, I couldn't earn a whole lot more than minimum wage. To me, it made no sense to be out in the work force and to pay someone else to raise my sons. Even though there were certain drawbacks -- in the end I'd worked less than 35 years and so my Social Security is somewhat less as a result -- I have zero regrets about being the one to raise my children.
That said, I fully understand that many others simply don't have the choice or opportunity that I had. Which is why I fully support (even if it impacts my taxes) subsidized daycare, especially for low income workers. If for no other reason than those workers will eventually get a decent Social Security payout.

(53,778 posts)or 100 dollars a week, 430 a month. That's steep for many families.
The BBB bill coverage seems better.

Very sensible and good for the public but republicans and Manchin and Sinema don't care much for what's good for people.

(13,420 posts)Working parents would love it. Employers would love it as well as many people would rejoin the labor force. Worker productivity and GDP would both increase. Sure, Republicans would complain but they complain about everything.
The issue is a winning one if the party would embrace it.
