Russia accused of causing 'global food crisis' at UN
Source: AFP via Yaoo
Russia was accused before the UN Security Council on Tuesday of having caused a "global food crisis" and putting people at risk of "famine" by starting the war in Ukraine, which serves as a breadbasket for Europe.
Russian President Vladimir Putin "started this war. Vladimir Putin created this global food crisis. And he is the one who can stop it," US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said during a Security Council meeting devoted to the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
"The responsibility for waging war on Ukraine -- and for the war's effects on global food security -- falls solely on Russia and on President Putin," she said.
France's ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Riviere, furthered that "Russia's aggression against Ukraine is increasing the risk of famine around the world" and that populations in developing countries would be the first to be affected.

(110,909 posts)There will likely be a distribution crisis as they continue to block traffic through the Black Sea.
However, winter wheat was planted last fall. With Russia withdrawing to the east, there is a chance a crop will be harvested, at least if they stay there. Wiunter wheat is the hard, red wheat used for bread. Spring wheat is a pale ivory color and is used in pastry.
It looks like it will have to be loaded onto trains instead of poured into the holds of ships. That will make it more expensive, but it will be available unless Russia does something else monumentally stupid.

Praise the efforts so far, talk about what needs to be done around the globe.
Even and especially the evangelicals would have a hard time raising a voice against it.
Besides, it's the right thing to do...

Last month it was the International Red Cross (check exchange rates at https://www.xe.com/ ). Not sure where it will go this month.

(6,377 posts)It was brutal. All of the speakers, except Russia and China, and I think possibly Brazil, didn't quite get that, condemned Russia not only for the war, but now also for impending world hunger. The two main themes were, Ukraine: from a breadbasket to a breadline, and the World Food Program: going from feeding hungry children to feeding starving children.
News gleaned from the sessions is that TWO humanitarian convoys from the UN went into Ukraine and delivered emergency supplies. This is the first I heard of this, and it certainly is good news. This news came at the start of the session, and also during I believe Ireland's speech.
However, during the Russian opening salvo, their speaker started on a rant about the UN cars, cars and trucks marked UN, were somehow sneaking in military gear. And, he said that one car was missing. I took the whole thing to mean that Russia might shell future convoys. Just my personal take. It seemed like a set up as an excuse to cut off the aid supplies by firing on them.
His speech really wasn't about what to do about starving children. The following speeches were very sharp and tough and really, this seems like a widening of the war on so many levels. Russia and its friends tried to lay this food insecurity on the sanctions, but just about everyone there refuted that and blamed Russia for starving little kids to death.
And, it isn't just in Ukraine. The food shortages will now extend to other countries where there were preexisting shortages anyway. The World Food Program (as you know, they won a Nobel Peace Prize for their program efforts) is now struggling to meet all needs.
I had the impression that at least one UN car was destroyed by Russia, but I can't bear to go back through the session to find it for you. Here's a link:
If Russia were to fire on a UN humanitarian convoy, which they may have done already, or may be planning to, how does that work concerning UN troops and NATO troops? The UN is only available for humanitarian missions; I'd think that members of the United Nations would not take kindly to such circumstance.

Modern UN troops are generally too lightly armed to provide security in this situation and of course the Ukrainian forces are too thin to provide any support. They're kind of busy blowing up tanks and shooting down MIGs, ATM.
I will reiterate my question, WTF is Russia doing on the Security Council?
Now that it is clear the Pooter isn't getting the whole ball... He's causing death and destruction and holding as much in the East as he can. Watch for him to start suing for a partition treaty and he'll try again someday.
