Maryland lawmakers pass bill to expand access to abortion

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The Maryland General Assembly passed a bill Tuesday that would expand access to abortion by ending a restriction that only physicians provide them and requiring most insurance plans to cover abortion care without cost.

The Senate gave the measure final passage on a 28-15 vote. That sends the measure to Republican Gov. Larry Hogan, whose office did not immediately comment on his position on the bill. The governor has said he personally opposes abortion, though he has called the issue settled law in the state.

While the Senate would need 29 votes to override a veto, a Senate version of the bill passed with 30 votes Monday night, and several senators were excused Tuesday when the Senate passed the House bill.

Supporters say Maryland does not have enough abortion providers for the needs of the state. Sen. Delores Kelley, a Baltimore County Democrat who is sponsoring a Senate version of the bill, noted in earlier debate that many counties do not have a single provider.

I was born in MT and lived there for 31 years but my US residence is in MD!

If only all US states were like our blue states! Like everywhere else, MD may not be perfect, but it always strives to be better and has many good people.

Howard County is my county of residence; there are so many inspiring individuals there!

Columbia - in one of the older areas - and has been since 1982, even though I also have a European residence.

I love Columbia, which truly has a mixture of and appreciation for different cultures and ethnicities.

One DIL is Korean-American, so I particularly love the Ellicott City area now known as Koreatown. https://governor.maryland.gov/2021/10/09/video-and-photo-release-state-of-maryland-opens-koreatown-in-ellicott-city/

I am also a BIG fan of Howard County Executive Calvin Ball. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_Ball_III

Guess I'm getting old, lol.

I'm in VA now, but I do get up to MD a couple of times of year to visit with the SO's parents, but haven't been to EC in a couple of years. So much has changed there, but it will always be home to me.

Wow, I hadn't heard about Koreatown in EC, that's so cool. And yes, the diversity and different cultures makes it a wonderful place to live and grow up.

Thanks for the link on the current County Exec, seems like HC is in good hands.

In fact, I went to school with a former HC Co Exec, Ken Ulman (and his brother Doug) for a time. Funny thing is my former vice principal ran against Ken and I also went to high school with his (former vp) son.

Small world.
