A Connecticut judge found Infowars host Alex Jones in contempt Wednesday after he failed to appear for a deposition in a lawsuit filed by victims families in the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Jones lawyer said.
The judge, Barbara Bellis, said that Jones will face a per-weekday fine starting at $25,000 until he sits for two days of depositions, the lawyer, Norm Pattis, said in a filing. The penalty, which will increase to $50,000 per day, is set to begin Friday.
Bellis said Jones hadnt produced enough evidence to support his claim that he missed a deposition last week because of health problems.
In November, Bellis found Jones liable for damages in the case over his claims that the Dec. 14, 2012, school shooting which left 20 first graders and six educators dead was a hoax.

(21,627 posts)They have the same problem in Argentina with Trump's buddy Macri, and many of his minions: they simply disregard court summons - in some cases for years - and when they do appear, it's only to plead the 5th.
Always the 5th.

(5,688 posts)I'll take what Mar-A-Lardo said about pleading the fifth and apply it to Jonesy-boy.

(32,674 posts)You can plead the 5th in a civil case, but that is telling the jury you are guilty and you have to pay. How many hundreds of millions is that?

(11,098 posts)Unlike in a criminal case, the jury can be told about the invocation of the Fifth Amendment. Some jurisdictions will engage in a presumption that had the party testified, the testimony would have been harmful to the case.

(45 posts)The whole court case came to a screeching halt in the favor for the families, the very second Alex Jones was asked to produce his company's finances.
Hell, the courts currently demanding fines but that could change. Jones is facing potential jail time if he doesn't comply, so it begs the question, how ugly are Infowars' finances?

(45 posts)If he still refuses to show his finances after being jailed. I'd doubt that'd be the case, but one can hope.

(5,857 posts)It is 25,000 on the first day and increased by 25,000 / day. Refundable to Jones if he does the deposition by April 15. If he doesn't then they can draw adverse inferences (assume he answered in the most harmful way).
