KYIV, Ukraine (AP) Russian troops began leaving the Chernobyl nuclear plant after soldiers got significant doses of radiation from digging trenches at the highly contaminated site, Ukraines state power company said Thursday as fighting raged on the outskirts of Kyiv and other fronts.
Energoatom gave no details on the condition of the troops or how many were affected. But it said the Russians had dug in in the forest inside the exclusion zone around the now-closed plant, the site in 1986 of the worlds worst nuclear disaster.
The troops panicked at the first sign of illness, which showed up very quickly, and began preparing to leave, Energoatom said.
There was no immediate comment from the Kremlin.

Original post before the update: Ukrainian president says defense is at a 'turning point'

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) Ukraines president said his countrys defense against the Russian invasion was at a turning point and again pressed the United States for more help, hours after the Kremlins forces reneged on a pledge to scale back some of their operations.
Russian bombardment of areas around Kyiv and the northern city of Chernihiv and intensified attacks elsewhere in the country further undermined hopes for progress toward ending the bloody conflict that has devolved into a war of attrition. Civilians trapped in besieged cities have shouldered some of the worst suffering, though both sides said Thursday they would attempt another evacuation from the port city of Mariupol.
Talks between Ukraine and Russia were set to resume Friday by video, according to the head of the Ukrainian delegation, David Arakhamia.
A delegation of Ukrainian lawmakers visited Washington on Wednesday to push for more U.S. assistance, saying their nation needs more military equipment, more financial help and tougher sanctions against Russia.

(3,334 posts)Including weapons such as missiles that can take out military targets in Russia and any Russian targets in Belarus.

(45,380 posts)There must be something worthwhile there to risk the radiation exposure.

(35,282 posts)They got some fairly new equipment that had been installed then looted (if Ukr sources are to be believed).
But they also used the place to store munitions, weapons, troops. Hundreds of tons of the stuff.
Why?
Because the Russians might not have flinched at hurling artillery shells in that direction, but they knew it was safe from any attack that involved artillery or things that go "boom!" They heard the outcry, the outrage, and knew that they were perfectly safe there--at least from any attack that could hurt the installation there.

(45,380 posts)then calculations like that are why they will lose this war. They could just as easily store all of that just across the border in Belarus.
