U.S. giving Ukraine PPE ahead of feared Russian chemical attack
By ALEXANDER WARD and QUINT FORGEY 04/01/2022 04:22 PM EDT Updated 04/01/2022 04:42 PM EDT

The United States has been quietly granting Ukraine’s request for protective equipment against a possible chemical weapons attack from Russia, four administration officials told NatSec Daily.

The U.S. and its Western allies fear Russian President Vladimir Putin will order the use of chemical weapons to break Ukraine’s stiff resistance. In turn, the Kremlin has leveled baseless accusations against the U.S. and Ukraine about bioweapons and chemical attacks, leading U.S. officials to fear Russia is plotting a false flag operation.

Meanwhile, the U.S. is rushing to provide Ukrainian civilians with gas masks, hazmat suits and other materials, though Kyiv could decide to send this protective gear to its military. How much has already been sent — or the U.S. plans to send in total — remains unclear.

5. That would be the last nail in his coffin.

If he drops chemical weapons or a nuke, the EU and NATO will have no choice but to become directly involved, and then he faces a war on multiple fronts. Even China won't be able to hem and haw its way around trying to stay neutral about the matter, as it has been.

I don't see it happening. Even if he gives the order, it's not a command which can be done on his orders alone. I believe that's the point when his cabinet would finally have the guts to remove him from office, because they know it would be the ruin of Russia. They've already got a massive trip to the Hague ahead of them for war crimes, just looking at the mass graves and the helpless dead they left on the streets while departing Kyiv.

Concentrate what combat power they still have and grab as much of Donetsk and Luhansk as they can and hold it. Possession is nine tenths of the law. A consolation prize, but it's better than nothing.

Ukrainian forces retake areas near Kyiv amid fear of traps

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian troops moved cautiously to retake territory north of the country’s capital on Saturday, using cables to pull the bodies of civilians off streets of one town out of fear that Russian forces may have left them booby-trapped.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that departing Russian troops were creating a “catastrophic” situation for civilians by leaving mines around homes, abandoned equipment and “even the bodies of those killed.” His claims could not be independently verified.

Associated Press journalists in Bucha, a suburb northwest of Kyiv, watched as Ukrainian soldiers backed by a column of tanks and other armored vehicles used cables to drag bodies off of a street from a distance. Locals said the dead — the AP counted at least six — were civilians killed without provocation by departing Russian soldiers.

“Those people were just walking and they shot them without any reason. Bang,” said a Bucha resident who declined to give his name citing safety reasons. “In the next neighborhood, Stekolka, it was even worse. They would shoot without asking any question.”

Generally the broadcast networks don't send their anchors and reporters to unsafe places. Notice Velshi and others were across the border in Poland, but now they're back in Lviv and others have returned to Kyiv.
