Matt Gaetz Blames Insulin Prices On Overweight People
Source: Crooks and Liars
Matt Gaetz actually sent an email newsletter to constituents (he's obviously sure they don't or can't read) which said the following:
While Democrat posturing of H.R. 6833 victimizes insulin payees as people with an uncontrollable disease that are being taken advantage of and need Big Brother to throw them a raft, lifestyle changes en masse would expeditiously lower demand and the subsequent prices of insulin. 90-95% of people with diabetes have type 2 diabetes, which can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating healthy food, and being active. Arbitrary price controls are no substitute for individual weight control. Since 2000, the number of diabetes cases in the U.S. has nearly doubled. The demand for insulin has increased and the requisite price increase has followed suit. In other words, the price of insulin increases as waistlines increase.
No comment on the fact that a great many people struggling with the price of insulin are totally not-obese CHILDREN.
Matt just fat-shamed the 25% of Florida residents who fall in the "obese" category.
I guess he figures that since he's gotten away with underage sex trafficking so far, this isn't a big deal.
Matt would never call Donald Trump "obese" to his face, but he clearly blames fat Florida seniors like Donald for INSULIN PRICES.

Hey, Matt -When are you going to blame ALL health issues on the fact that people get those health issues? Can't afford cancer treatments? - Simple, don't get cancer.
Remember the famous saying from that Democratic congressman about the Republican solution to healthcare, " Hurry up and die"

(15,160 posts)That his "wingman" who is supposedly testifying in the case - and who keeps asking for more time to "cooperate" is doing the Donald J. Trump Delay Wiggle. That guy will be sentenced to prison, so as long as he keeps pretending to dish the dirt, then he stays out of jail. And maybe he's hoping if there are changes in DC with the next elections, he might get somebody to drop the charges or pardon him.
Just my latest conspiracy theory. And I'm stickin' to it!

(412 posts)First of all I do not live in Florida. Secondly Gaetz is an ass. Am 5'9" and weigh around 165-175 my entire life so I am not overweight. I am a type 1 insulin dependent diabetic who inherited from my family. Both sides have diabetics running rampart with it. Only family member of my generation who is diabetic but good chance the others could develop it later in life.
So Gaetz and others need to understand some of us cannot help getting this disease.

...and, Type 2 is almost always preventable by a healthier lifestyle, these "Self Responsibility" Repukes are still full of crap!
First of all, Type 2 diabetes can result from advanced age, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure in "Skinny People". Do Repukes want people to die earlier, eat less beef, and work fewer hours? Ofcourse not. They fight every program for healthier school lunches, warning labels on food, saving gym classes in schools, and every other healthy lifestyle program. Remember when they ridiculed Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" program? Plus these oil-loving SOBs would rather you drive to your mailbox than walk there.
If these hypocrites want to lower the cost of insulin by lowering the demand (which I'm all for), then they should stop putting up roadblocks for legislation that would significantly help reduce the number of Type 2 diabetics, especially in our children.

(412 posts)Was on Metformin trying to control it but it did not work even though I exercised and dieted so they switched me to insulin. So far it has helped but still costs me around $600 per month after insurance.

(2,386 posts)Type I is the result of an autoimmune response: The immune system attacks the islet cells that produce insulin. While anyone can technically become Type I, the odds of a Type II becoming Type I are really low. You don't become a Type I from weight issues, but you can be an insulin dependent Type II, just like Type Is are insulin dependent.
That's reason that Type IIs take metformin, etc., to reduce insulin resistance (meaning to make the cells sensitive to insulin - again - and thus, take up glucose from the blood stream) to try to prevent that person from becoming insulin dependent.
My Oncologist who I see specifically for the diabetes told me I was type 2 then became type 1 because the meds were not working so put me on insulin.
Now for the confusing part. When the pandemic started my primary physician who I liked decided to quit practicing medicine. No other primary doctor would take new patients which my insurance would cover. About a year later I found one who would see me. He said what you are talking about with Type 2 insulin dependent. Asked my oncologist about that so. She said that was wrong. So I am confused because I have a good relationship with my oncologist.
I just take the meds they give me, exercise and diet. So far so good but insulin is expensive.

(2,386 posts)Or endocrinologist?
I ask because oncologists are cancer docs.
An endocrinologist is who you usually deal with for diabetes (and other diseases of the endocrine system).

(10,724 posts)The process is complicated, but the raw materials are pretty basic. Supply isn't hard to scale up if demand increases, and the costs of production don't change much.
If anything, like many products, it's cheaper per dose to make larger amounts than to make smaller amounts.

(5,437 posts)Little Matty invented Victim Blaming!
It's true some diabetics are overweight. Like me.
But which comes first, overeating because you have no physical energy, don't know why, but eating something has given you energy in the past . . . but now, that food turns to fat.
So which is first, the fat or the cellular insulin resistance/lack of insulin production by the pancreas?
He is right though, healthy eating and exercise help.
So here is an idea or two, Matty boy!
Pass some laws to:
Close down all fast food places in Florida and the rest of the country.
Ban the addition of sugars of any kind to manufactured foods.
Supermarkets to stop selling sugar and any food over 10% sugar content.
Refrigerator/pantry police to visit homes and remove all unhealthy foods.
Check for presence of healthy foods like unprocessed foods, raw vegetables.
Compulsory exercise of prescribed types for everyone for a set number of hours per day.
(To help, TV stations and streaming media stop transmitting, social media on the Internetz shut down during daylight hours.)
. . . . Matty, you can thank me later.

(4,552 posts)Do you get any campaign donations from the sugar industry?
In the United States, fewer than 4,500 farm businesses produce sugar. Yet they cost taxpayers up to $4 billion a year in subsidies. The U.S. sugar program is a Stalinist-style supply control initiative that limits imports through quotas and domestic production through what are called marketing allotments.
The entire sugar industry is sucking on the socialist corporate welfare teat.
How about we take that 4 billion socialist cor4porate welfare check and give it right to Medicare to treat sick people.
Also interestingly during the slave era the worst farm you could be on was a sugar plantation.
Sugar is an addiction.

(19,274 posts)If he was serious about addressing it, he'd be promoting ways to encourage healthy eating habits. Less crop subsidies to keep cheeseburgers cheap, and more subsidies to reduce costs for fresh fruits and vegetables. Promoting Michelle Obama's healthy school lunch program instead of fighting it.
But instead, he talks out both sides of his mouth.

(7,401 posts)Insulin resistance causes Type II Diabetes. High insulin levels also promote obesity.
They are associated, but obesity does NOT cause T2 diabetes.
Massive intake of carbohydrates, including refined sugars, "grazing" style eating (which promotes a continuous high level of insulin), and the intake of processed seed oils that promote inflammation all contribute to insulin resistance.
Wanna clobber Type 2 diabetes? Cut out as much added sugar as possible, and drastically cut carbohydrates, especially refined carbs.

(7,286 posts)It's rather bizarre to me all through the debates of passing Obama Care (before and after) these effed up psychopathic Republican office holders in Congress act like most if not all of their constituents live well and are in perfect health.
But whenever I see pictures of those that turn out in rally's and such, the majority of rally attendees are significantly overweight to varying degrees, but most assuredly morbidly obese.
I never understand it. Do they applause these outrageous and obviously stupid lies?
