F.B.I. Preparing to Investigate How Classified Material Went to Trump's Home
Source: NY Times
WASHINGTON Federal authorities are in the preliminary stages of investigating the handling of classified material found at former President Donald J. Trumps Florida home after he left office, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday.
The effort, led by the F.B.I., stems from the discovery of classified information in 15 boxes that contained documents, mementos, gifts and letters that had been taken from the White House at the end of Mr. Trumps term in apparent violation of the requirements for turning over all presidential records to the National Archives.
The development was reported earlier by The Washington Post.
The National Archives said in February that it had consulted with the Justice Department about the classified material, which it retrieved the previous month from Mr. Trumps Mar-a-Lago home in Florida. The agency described the materials in question as classified national security information.

They aren't sitting around in old liquor boxes in the garage. This wasn't a movers' mistake.
The mere fact of those documents existing outside secure locations is damning. The damn is already cooked in.

The crime is in their presence in tfg's house.

My guess is that if there was something damning in the records, we would have heard about it.
If they are "high security" -- which is questionable -- officials can say trump had documents that showed where every missile and bomb is stored in the USA and he had been trying to sell it to Putin, China, Iran, etc. Yeah, they've got him. But I doubt that is what was stuck in the closet.
Remember Sandy Berger--
Sandy Berger-2003
Fifty-eight year old Sandy Berger, the former National Security Adviser under the Clinton Administration, illegally took classified documents from the National Archives on more than one occasion. During his visits to the Archives, it was determined that Berger folded the documents in his clothes, walked out of the National Archives building in Washington, D.C., and placed them under a nearby construction trailer for retrieval later on. Two years later Berger was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and probation and fined $50,000. He also also had to pay $6,905 for the administrative costs of his two-year probation. Berger also lost his security clearance and license to practice law.

Gotta admit, I'd settle for seeing trump in an orange vest picking up trash along the interstates.

But anyway, what are you saying? Is this another area where you think we should move on whistling, as if nothing happened?

I am, he lost, but he keeps winning as Democrats eat their own Bragg, Garland, etc.
Sorry, Im not letting that MFer keep me up at night. Learned my lesson with Fitzmas. There are issues that are more important in this country, other than trump.

(21,337 posts)meaning if it fell into the wrong hands it would be a threat to our national security. After a month or so it's nice that DOJ found the time to do a preliminary investigation. WTF.
What about looking for the missing classified documents?

(43,161 posts)HOW did the items get there? They were - follow me - STOLEN!
Can you believe it? They didn't walk there all by their baby selves. Santa and the Tooth Fairy didn't deliver them.
They were light-fingered! Grand larceny of national secrets. Theft.
Update: And note the tentative headline. "Preparing". Not actually doing it, just thinking about it. And the items traveled there of their own volition. Like the FBI doesn't want to touch this with a 10 foot pole, so don't expect too much out of it. WHAT ARE THEY HIDING? WHO ARE THEY PROTECTING? Why the weak effort??

(8,699 posts)This Kabuki theater is getting old. So far the FBI/DOJ plan to deal with trump and his inner circle is:
1) say your investigating
2) pretend to shuffle papers until press find another shinny object
3) insist "no one is above the law" to those few still paying attention/asking about accountability. Show no work or progress.
4) still do nothing but shuffle papers
5) quietly end investigation. Blame some non-specific reason that no one can do anything about it.
6) run out the clock on statute of limitations on even minor charges.
This is a rich, connected, old white man's world. People like me don't matter.

Here in the US with the DOJ these days it seems more like: "we pretend to work, and they pay us." We being the DOJ.
