An American Airlines passenger who allegedly pushed a flight attendant and spat at crew members has been hit with the biggest fine ever issued by US aviation regulators, and another fine topping $75,000 (£57,500) was issued to a Delta Air Lines passenger who bit a fellow passenger after trying to hug and kiss another.
Since January 2021 when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a zero-tolerance policy, the agency has proposed fines of about $7m for disruptive passengers. Two new fines issued on Friday were the highest yet.
The FAA proposed a $81,950 fine for an American Airlines passenger on a July flight from Dallas to Charlotte in North Carolina, alleging the passenger threatened to hurt the flight attendant that offered help to the passenger after she fell into the aisle. The passenger then pushed the flight attendant aside and tried to open the cabin door.

(22,037 posts)Seriously. This behavior puts everyone and the plane at risk. This is unacceptable.
There was a story not too long ago about an Alaska state senator who needed to fly from Anchorage to Juneau to participate in the state government. She acted out on an Alaska Air flight and the company put her on their no fly list. She complained that she couldn't get to work.

(1,047 posts)A permanent no fly list should have been in effect
from the beginning. Along with heavy fines and
maybe gaol time for the really bad actors.

(34,398 posts)were pleasant and drama-free when I went on vacation last month. The planes I flew in were packed, too. It was my first vacation since The Plague hit and it was great, I even appreciated the fact that the layovers were boring, lol.

(13,907 posts)of the perpetrator. Too easy these days to get a fake identity and fly anyway... With Face recog it would be more difficult to deny it is you... YMMV

(285 posts)I would worry that mistakes in the system would keep innocent people from flying. I could easily see my going to board the plane only for the boarding agent to tell me I am someone else, someone on the no-fly list and not being able to prove otherwise as IDs can be falsified.
I also wonder if a limited time ban, say five years, for these sorts of first-time offenders would be easier to pass. I agree I do not want to fly with them. I just wonder if the madness is temporary.

Flying is not a Constitutional right.

Brown skin is proven to not be a reliable indicator of airline violence when there are lots of white, black and other types assaulting flight attendants.
These violent passengers need to be treated like terrorists. They have caused serious injuries and flight diversions/groundings. If the government won't put them on the federal no-fly list, airlines need to share their banned lists with each other.

(30,613 posts)Absolutely. If the governement refuses to protect the public, the airlines do have an interest in doing so. They can build a private-sector solution.
