A federal judge on Thursday called Donald Trump a threat to democracy, accusing the former president of instigating a mob of "weak-minded" followers to attack the US Capitol on January 6, Politico reported.
"I think our democracy is in trouble," US District Judge Reggie Walton said, "because, unfortunately, we have charlatans like our former president who doesn't, in my view, really care about democracy but only about power."
Walton, who was appointed to the DC Circuit by former President George W. Bush, lashed out at Trump after the jury trial of a January 6 insurrectionist.
Dustin Thompson, 38, was convicted of obstructing Congress as it tried to certify President Joe Biden's victory a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison. According to prosecutors, he walked to the US Capitol after Trump implored his supporters to "fight like hell," breaking into the Senate parliamentarian's office and stealing a bottle of liquor.

(14,856 posts)Then they might even say we live in a republic, not a democracy, as if they're completely exclusive. With "Republic" being their code-word for Republican totalitarianism, or perhaps some kind of evangelical Christian theocracy, apparently.
I'm sure that the gullible nitwits are upset about Biden supposedly not winning, but that's what they get for treating every source of information as questionable if it doesn't come from Fox News or some extreme right-wing propagandist on the radio. It's all just a gigantic liberal conspiracy in their f***ed-up minds.

(9,195 posts)That is one of the 23 Federal Circuit Courts of Appeal. He was appointed to the United States District Court for the District of Columbia a trial court by George W. Bush. Prior to that, George H W Bush appointed him to the Superior Court for the District of Columbia. This is the DC equivalent to a state trial court.

Justice matters.

(14,856 posts)My coworkers were miserable at a hellish factory that paid minimum wage, years ago in the 80's, when one of them started playing the angry rants of Rush Limbaugh on his portable radio during lunch breaks.
Then I witnessed several of them identifying with the anger, on an emotional level. As more time passed, those coworkers who previously knew almost nothing about politics, American history or just about anything else civics-related... suddenly "knew" the deceptions of Limbaugh as their facts. And Limbaugh constantly reminded them to avoid information from the evil "liberal media", of course, which they tended to do anyway because it wasn't as exciting emotionally to them. Just like they tended to not enjoy school when they were younger.
