Court won't revive ban on secret filming at slaughterhouses

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Monday rejected an appeal by Kansas to revive a law, earlier struck down by lower courts, that banned secret filming at slaughterhouses and other livestock facilities.

The justices did not comment in leaving in place a ruling by a federal appeals court panel that the so-called ag-gag law violated the First Amendment by stifling speech critical of animal agriculture.

A three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a split decision ruled that even if deception is used to enter private property, Kansas may not discriminate based on whether the person intends to harm or help the enterprise.

The appellate ruling upheld a permanent injunction issued by a federal judge in 2020.

This is a HUGE win for farm animal rights. I've watched a couple of these videos. Sickening.

It's a primitive method of policing bad practices. Sunshine is the best disinfectant.

I can understand why slaughterhouses would want to hide the obvious from consumers and pretend kittens and rainbows.

That's not even touching on the exploitation of many workers (see: Human Rights Watch and Oxfam America)

My guess is that Gorsuch probably sided with the lower Courts.
Alito and Thomas sided with Kansas
It's hard to know because the 1st Amendment is involved in this case (which is why I think Gorsuch would vote for the lower Courts)
Guessing that Roberts, Breyer, Kagan, Sotomayor and Barrett also voted in favor of the lower Courts
Kavanaugh is a total guess, but I'm going with the lower Courts as well.

Next, let’s hope they begin to fade away as people respond to this industry’s negative impact of Mother Earth.

As a kid, I remember a creek full of blood, shit, and bits running by the slaughterhouse then on into the sea.

Industrial meat farming is a violent business.
