Antisemitic incidents hit record while jumping 34% in 2021, report says

BY ZOE CHRISTEN JONES

APRIL 26, 2022 / 6:09 AM / CBS NEWS

The number of antisemitic incidents in the United States in 2021 increased by 34% over the previous year, according to a new report released by the Anti-Defamation League Center on Extremism. The 2,717 incidents in 2021 is the highest number recorded by the ADL since it began tracking them in 1979, the group said.

"When it comes to antisemitic activity in America, you cannot point to any single ideology or belief system, and in many cases, we simply don't know the motivation," ADL CEO and national director Jonathan Greenblatt said in a release Tuesday. "But we do know that Jews are experiencing more antisemitic incidents than we have in this country in at least 40 years, and that's a deeply troubling indicator of larger societal fissures."

According to the yearly report, 88 cases of assault were cataloged in 2021, along with 1,776 cases of harassment and 853 cases of vandalism. None of the assaults were deadly or resulted in mass casualties, and 77 of the reported assaults were committed without the use of a deadly weapon.

Extremist groups or individuals who are known members of extremist groups accounted for 484 of the incidents, the ADL said. The vast majority of these came in the form of "antisemitic fliers, banners, stickers or written messages." The ADL also noted that "all of the incidents emerged from adherents of right-wing or white supremacist ideologies."

ADL Audit Finds Antisemitic Incidents in United States Reached All-Time High in 2021
Assaults increased 167 percent, jumping to a total of 88 reports in 2021 from 33 in 2020.

New York, NY, April 26, 2022 … Antisemitic incidents reached an all-time high in the United States in 2021, with a total of 2,717 incidents of assault, harassment and vandalism reported to ADL (the Anti-Defamation League). This represents the highest number of incidents on record since ADL began tracking antisemitic incidents in 1979 – an average of more than seven incidents per day and a 34 percent increase year over year.

ADL’s annual Audit of Antisemitic Incidents, issued today, found that antisemitic incidents reached a high watermark across virtually every category. Attacks against Jewish institutions, including Jewish community centers (JCCs) and synagogues, were up by 61 percent, incidents at K-12 schools increased 106 percent, and incidents on college campuses rose 21 percent.

Assaults – considered the most serious incident type because it involves person-on-person physical violence triggered by antisemitic animus – increased 167 percent, jumping to a total of 88 reports in 2021 from 33 in 2020. Incidents of harassment were up 43 percent, and acts of antisemitic vandalism rose 14 percent.

A substantial surge was reported during the May 2021 conflict between Israel and Hamas. There was a staggering 148 percent increase in reports of antisemitic incidents that month when compared in May 2020, as tensions were high and hundreds of anti-Israel protests took place in dozens of U.S. cities. As Jewish individuals were violently beaten in the streets from New York to Los Angeles, a total of 387 incidents were reported that month with 297 of the incidents occurring after May 10, the date marking the official start of military action.

And it is now international. Just look at Ukraine. Why do you suppose so many on the right wing, like Franklin Graham, are praying for Putin? Bothsidesism covers the tracks. And it you think it is bad now just wait until Musk unwinds thngs at Twitter.

We told ourselves that time and nature would make us kinder and smarter as a country.

While many standing in line to see TFG stir their anger at rallys are comical elders with mis-spelled signs, many are young. I saw no walkers or wheelchairs in the Charlottesville marches. Those racists were largely in their 20s and 30s.

The cancer of bigotry has passed to yet another generation.

What surprised me in the ADL report is the apparent connection between the rise in Israel/HAMAS tensions and antisemitic incidents in the US. As far as I can tell, it is a fairly recent phenomenon. It can not be reasonably attributed to the right wing: their hatred for Muslims is nearly indistinguishable from their hatred for Jews. Nor am I aware of any rise in anti-Muslim attacks by the right wing that coincided with the conflict.

There isn't nearly enough data to pinpoint any specific causes for this spike, but it is very troubling indeed.

...Reddit, Gab, etc. as well as all the individual promoters of anti-Semitism: Nick Fuentes and his moronic Groypers, Owen Benjamin, Roosh V...

Here's a post from the other night about how Reddit moderators fail to deal with their anti-Semitism problem:

https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=16629647

There was a group called "Frenworld" that became one of the most toxic subs ever. It was nothing but Nazi Pepe memes. The sub got banned after a story about Frenworld's constant Holocaust denial ended up in an Israeli paper. That didn't work out too well for the mods at Reddit, and they had to do something. The problem is they didn't ban any of the members. So they started up a new sub, r/Apustaja, and most of the same members are still there. It's supposed to be apolitical, but get this: the group members are such basement-dwelling incel losers that they will literally sit around for years waiting to sneak a covert Nazi reference into a Pepe cartoon. The sub is watched by antifascist subs like r/AgainstHateSubreddits who have shown in detail what losers these guys (and they are almost exclusively men) really are.

The only thing that seems to get Reddit to moderate itself is negative press coverage.

It's old fashioned hateful propaganda repackaged for modern times to appeal to today's bigoted idiots.

Oh wait, no it isn't. The only thing that is really "shocking" is the complete lack of knowledge and understanding many have about anti-Semitism, Jews, and Judaism. If more people were actually interested in anti-Semitism, especially in combatting it in an on-going fashion, as opposed to when it crops up, if then, then we wouldn't see reports like this. Of course, some of the very attacks happening now are heavily influenced by historic anti-Semitism, but people are so unaware of it, it seems to come out of "nowhere." It isn't!

Jews are always a favorite target. It is irrelevant to people we are only 2.3% of the US population and only .19 percent of the WORLD population, but Jews and our proxies make for popular boogeymen. Many simply recycle anti-Semitism and just switch out terms. It is discouraging to see people engage in anti-Semitism, but it is more discouraging to see people enable it or defend it, including some Jews!!

Just remember, even if there are no Jews, it is the fault of the Jews, so even if some are successful at eliminating us, we will ALWAYS haunt the living with our powers. It is also important to remember, even when they come for the Jews, they will eventually come for others!
