Ferocious tornado strikes Andover, Kansas, causing severe damage
Source: Washington Post

An outbreak of severe storms swept through the eastern half of Kansas and Nebraska Friday, unleashing tornadoes, destructive wind gusts and massive hail in both states.
A major tornado developed just before sunset in the eastern Wichita suburbs before entering the city of Andover, where it caused substantial damage. There were no immediate reports of injuries, but many homes and businesses were damaged or destroyed.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) declared a state of emergency in the storms aftermath.
Social media footage of the twister showed a fast-moving, violent tempest shredding across Andover like a buzz saw. Among the heavily damaged structures was a YMCA where cars where flung into the building, which partially collapsed.

(23,252 posts)Gotta feel for those people! to Andover.
We had hard rain, hail, lightning, and high wind last night. It was wild!
ETA: almost exactly 21 years ago (4/26/91), Andover was hit by an F5 twister that killed 17 people and injured 225. It was one of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded.
ago. Remember this well. My in-laws passed nearby there a day or two after it happened.

doesnt seem that long ago. Where did the time go. We were building our house that year and moved in the next year.

(31,174 posts)farmers were burning their wheat fields as is custom after harvest. Burnt fields and smoky skies added to tornado destruction to create some pretty hellish-looking landscapes.

(86,673 posts)And the tornado itself was incredible. An amazing formation, unlike many we've seen in recent years.
That was a Wizard of Oz kind of tornado.

(2,028 posts)Timmer the drama queens irritating commentary lol. What really made this one different was it completely decoupled from the parent supercell and sustained itself. It moved directly north as the supercell that spawned it moved away off to the ENE. It does happen but they are rare and very dangerous due to the extremely unpredictable ground track. We will get these types occasionally in the midwest in the late fall.
News 9 team got some incredible video of the twister through its 15 min life time. Glad there weren't any fatalities.

Too big, too close!!
Much damage, I assume.
We had a tornado hit our big neighborhood two decades ago. It was spun off of the mighty Hurricane Isabel. The tornado took 100's of big trees down & many roofs off. It could've been worse; thankfully, there were no deaths.

I got home and found my pregnant wife crying in the basement, thinking she was going to be a single parent.
