Biden ticks up, but GOP holds advantage on economy, Post-ABC poll finds

Last edited Sun May 1, 2022, 06:58 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: Washington Post

President Biden’s standing with Americans has improved slightly over the past two months, but he remains in negative territory in most assessments of his performance in office and Republicans hold substantial advantages over Democrats on key economic indicators that are shaping the midterm election year, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. The new survey, while better for the president and his party than his low point two months ago, nonetheless underscores the head winds Democratic candidates are facing ahead of the November balloting.

With a 42 percent approval rating overall, Biden gets low marks on his handling of the economy and inflation and Republicans are significantly more trusted than Democrats on both measures. More than 9 in 10 Americans say they are concerned, at minimum, about the rate of inflation, which has been at a 40-year high in recent months. That includes 44 percent who categorize themselves as “upset.” Republicans are far more likely to call themselves upset over inflation than either independents or Democrats.

At the same time, half of all Americans (50 percent) say good-paying jobs are easy to find in their communities, findings that reflect the unemployment rate standing near a half-century low and, anecdotally, the many “hiring” signs in business windows across the country. A lesser 43 percent say those jobs are hard to find. Republicans, who generally rate the economy more negatively than Democrats, are, perhaps surprisingly, more likely to say good-paying jobs are easy to find.

In a positive indicator for Biden and his party, the Post-ABC poll also shows Democrats moving to rough parity with Republicans on intentions to vote in House races in November, often seen as a key indicator of the size of the potential shifts in the balance of power. Republicans need a net gain of five seats to capture control of the House from the Democrats, which would allow them to block Biden’s agenda for the last half of his term. Today, 46 percent of registered voters say they would vote for the Democrat in their congressional district, compared with 45 percent who say they would vote for the Republican. Based on historical patterns, Democrats would likely need a bigger advantage to avoid losing their majority.

A mixed bag but at least some good signs holding up against a tidal wave of "bad news" while a veritable laundry list of campaign promises fulfilled that protect the American worker, protect the environment, and protect our democracy by helping us climb out of the ravine that the GOP has thrown us into, gets ignored. Key is to get us in a good position before November!

I for sure am one of them….And with good reason!

The last 3 election cycles have proven that the polls really are not accurate. They’ve done nothing to change their poor polling methodology and yet are still to be believed?

538 the supposed gold standard, b4 the last presidential election, out of the blue changed the rating of trafalgor and rasmussen from low numbers to As and Bs..really?

Silver came to political prominence in 2008, when his aggregations of election polls produced an impressive predictive model that called that year’s national elections with remarkable accuracy. In subsequent years, he and his organization, FiveThirtyEight, have produced inconsistent results: an inaccurate muck-up of 2010 elections in the U.K.; an accurate prediction of the 2012 results in the U.S.; and a wildly incorrect take on the 2016 elections that he continues to attempt to retcon into an impressive showing by claiming he was slightly less overconfident about a Donald Trump loss than everybody else.

More recently, he was confidently mocking supporters of impeachment for their antimajoritarian views: “Wait aren’t you the guy who thinks impeachment will be a really good political move for Democrats even though it polls at like 37%?,” he tweeted in September, barely a month before the Democrats launched an actual impeachment inquiry following revelations that Trump clumsily sought some kind of foreign assistance in digging up dirt on his political opponents, a decision that within a matter of weeks swung a majority of public sentiment in favor of impeachment.

Increasingly, one suspects that despite his claims to analytical rigor, at some very basic level, Silver does not actually know what a poll is. He is not alone in this; a fair portion of the country’s political punditry and opinion-making class is equally misinformed. In their conception, polls of opinion and sentiment represent not a snapshot of the present as informed by the past, but rather a hazy but prescient view into the future; not a measurement, but a prediction. “[Y]ou can actually write down what will happen in the future, with as much confidence as you write down the history of the past. Because it’s science!” This is why so much media discourse around polling emphasizes a framework that paints polls of present attitudes as a form of absolute constraint on where sentiment will go.

in regards to the economy and inflation. You agree with that?

The new survey, while better for the president and his party than his low point two months ago, nonetheless underscores the head winds Democratic candidates are facing ahead of the November balloting.

Do you agree with this?

What I am saying is that their attempt to make both parties sound equally engaged and working for a solution to the current issues facing this country is laughable. The rethugs are only interested in being in power by being the most wealthy. Once this country is untenable, they will be out of here so fast you may not remember that they were even here.

'Biden approval ticks up, yet remains underwater.'

The wording there should be obvious to anyone. The Post is trying to hedge their bets in case their rethug masters actually lose the midterms, but they are also making sure that we keep in mind that the rethugs are legitimately trying to be proper representatives in Congress. They stopped doing that a long time ago.

7. Poll Conclusion:
Sun May 1, 2022, 08:09 AM
May 2022

Numbers without context lie, liars use numbers to mislead. Therefore polls are gerrymandered the same way geographical districts are—it’s more about asking the right people than asking the right question. There’s no random sample anymore when Republicans are a party whose main attribute is they’re proud to be liars. They’ll predictably lie to misrepresent that they’re neutral or a Democrat on any political poll. That skews polls in favor of Republicans since Democrats are truthful to a fault on matters like this.

And so we get news-worthless polls like this.

Sun May 1, 2022, 08:48 AM
May 2022

1.) Delivered 200 million shots in less than 100 days. This was double the initial goal of 100 shots in 100 days, and 200 shots was hit with a week to spare. 220 million in total were administered in 100 days. [NBC News, 4/22/21]

11.) Mandated masks on federal property. The Executive Order is meant to protect the federal workforce and encourage mask usage across the country. It also developed a testing plan for the federal workforce. [WH, 1/20/21]
12.) Rejoined Paris climate accord. The Biden administration rejoined the Paris Climate accord nearly four years after the Trump administration began the process to exit the international agreement which sets ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas pollution, and nearly four months after the Trump administration had officially withdrawn. This would have left the United States in the company of Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Eritrea, Yemen, and Libya, which are the six nations who have not joined. [WH, 1/20/21]
13.) Rescinded Muslim ban. Biden issued an Executive Order revoking Trump executive actions he called “a stain on our national conscience and are inconsistent with our long history of welcoming people of all faiths and no faith at all” and “just plain wrong.” [WH, 1/20/21]
14.) Rejoined World Health Organization. The Trump administration had pulled the United States out of the global health organization. [WH, 1/20/21

While he was running the congressionally-funded international broadcaster VOA, he picked fights with media, attacked the so-called “deep state,” disciplined his own journalists for asking questions of Trump appointees, and faced regular accusations of pro-Trump bias. Biden’s pick to replace him was a whistleblower who is part of a lawsuit alleging Pack committed illegal acts. [NPR, 1/20/21]
37.) Created COVID-19 response coordinator reporting to president. This executive order essentially restarted the NSC pandemic response team that Trump eliminated. [White House, 1/20/21]

39.) Changed White House website to ask for pronouns. Four years prior to this change, the Trump White House removed all mention of LGBTQ from its website. [NBC News, 1/21/21]

I remember when the same type of long list was posted on DU many times when Obama was President while the media ignored it and a subset of DUers proceeded to dismiss it and insist instead, on repeatedly pounding out a series of RW nonsense that they guaranteed would be enacted by Obama.

Let's hope that President Biden will continue to ride atop the wave!

onto less economically endowed taxpayers. And that makes them more trusted with the economy??? The rich get richer with fewer taxes, and the non-rich pay more???

Trump put the nation on a trillion dollar debt plan and the GOP nonetheless has the support of voters? How is that?

The GOP has NO PLAN for the economy, and they get support? Bizarre.

Oh, the benefits of pure propaganda... Dazzle the voters with bullshit and they'll eat it up.

but this is slowly happening. And no I don't use TikTok but my nieces and nephews (and the grand-nephews) do (in some cases because the company gobbled up some of the social media entities that they used) but the DNC and WH have now started delving in there.

The M$M is completely corporate-owned so they will not cover Democrats except in a negative light.

DNC gets on TikTok to test impact on young voters

Alexi McCammond

The Democratic National Committee joined TikTok earlier this month, hoping to engage more with younger voters and test the benefits of the platform's viral videos for future campaigns, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: TikTok is the central place for Gen Z to get news, as Axios has reported. The Democrats are the first of the two national parties to join. It's already become the Democrats' highest-performing social platform for video views.

By the numbers: DNC TikTok videos have amassed over 2 million views in just over one week, and the party currently has nearly 25,000 followers.

  • The growth potential is huge: TikTok has over 1 billion active monthly users.

  • The big picture: This will be the first midterm cycle in the TikTok era — it launched in China in 2016 but didn't become popular in the U.S. until the fall of 2018.

  • The now-widespread app has become so important in Democratic politics, the White House held a briefing specifically for TikTok influencers on March 11 to teach them how to share accurate information about Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
  • Democrats plan to use footage of President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in their videos, as well as other Democratic figures, to share more about what their party is accomplishing in Washington, Axios is told.

The White House is briefing TikTok stars about the war in Ukraine

With millions getting their information about the war from the platform, the administration wants to get its message to top content creators

    By Taylor Lorenz

    (snip)

The White House has been closely watching TikTok’s rise as a dominant news source, leading to its decision to approach a select group of the platform’s most influential names.

This week, the administration began working with Gen Z For Change, a nonprofit advocacy group, to help identify top content creators on the platform to orchestrate a briefing aimed at answering questions about the conflict and the United States’ role in it. Victoria Hammett, deputy executive director of Gen Z For Change, contacted dozens with invitations via email and gathered potential questions for the Biden administration.

The invitations to the event were distributed Tuesday and Wednesday. Kahlil Greene, 21, a creator with more than 534,000 followers on TikTok, said he wasn’t surprised when an invitation arrived in his email inbox. “People in my generation get all our information from TikTok,” he said. “It’s the first place we’re searching up new topics and learning about things.” So, he figured, it made sense that the Biden administration would engage people like him on the platform.

The briefing was led by Matt Miller, a special adviser for communications at the White House National Security Council, and Psaki. The Washington Post obtained a recording of the call, and in it, Biden officials stressed the power these creators had in communicating with their followers. “We recognize this is a critically important avenue in the way the American public is finding out about the latest,” said the White House director of digital strategy, Rob Flaherty, “so we wanted to make sure you had the latest information from an authoritative source.”

    22. Bullshit....they keep forgetting that there is a fascist loving party that is whining about people

    May 2022

trying to get a student debt relief , and the GD right wing fascist are whining that next up will be auto loans and credit cards.....maybe they should go back and look at the 1986 Tax Reform Act that "everyone" was jumping up and down with glee and the start of the basic fucking over the taxpayers , you know the Act that corporations were still able to write off there loans when it came to taxes...in fact it went down to 40% and oh boy my tax deduction went up, but I lost a deduction on interest , but this media newspaper doesn't mention that fact.....they also don't mention in this hit job how, let's say one fucking governor in Texas decided all by himself to just stop trucks from coming over to Mexico, which made inflation go higher, and how corporations are basically price gouging the public, have you been to the show room to look at lets say a brand new Ford Maverick, the MSRP is around $19,000 to $26,000 for a Ford XLT Maverick, the car dealers are charging over $7,000 on that price since they couldn't get any (its called market adjusted pricing), that is what called price gouging and inflation, and they had no chips for the cars, because everyone was using the worthless model of outsourcing every damn thing based on lower price in wages, and using another country to pit itself against another country, and then turning right around and blaming the workers in this country as being to expensive.......and then next up they talk about jobs, just ask that Utah senator Mittens what he did with Bain Capital and his fucking holding company he was outscoring jobs and getting a tax break for doing it..... and then they keep forgetting that during the rein of terror (2016-2020) with the traitor in Washington and his corrupt weaseling administration , that this country had over 750,000 deaths in a raging pandemic and he was getting on stage telling people to inject themselves with bleach.....and somehow in the last year and half it is now Bidens fault JFC...
That headline is so full of shit
You have a governor in Florida that is outright attacking a business for being inclusive of people that are LGBQT and then using some fascist authoritarian BS about CRT, and some how this is going to be Bidens problem watch....you also have from the same state Florida a "guy" that defrauded Medicare and now wants to means test it and completely abolish it in five years.....5 YEARS and you got have in this country, righty now 26 terrorists republican governor and legislatures in this country still trying to tear down this republic and are actively attacking voting rights with the help from a US Supreme Court that has 6 federalist society members and who knows how many district court judges and the dark money groups tearing down basic rights to have life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.........what the fuck am I missing here....Biden ticks up but the GOP hold an advantage...... advantage in what...... plutocracy to let the oligarchs come and completely take over....

But then again we have to think about how two senators who really fucked over the administration and the people, that is a fact.....

This reminds me of a cartoon.....about the media....

CBS? CNN? Newsweek? NBC? THEY don't invite us on their shows.

Psaki "has the microphone" daily because she does a press briefing and that is the only "coverage" that the corporate-owned media will reluctantly agree to showing.... maybe... since "we" own none of it.

Every single day, elected Democrats are tweeting about what they have done and that gets posted on DU while DUers complain about "tweets", despite it actually being "messaging" because that is about the only outlet, short of buying ads in every major media market to run non stop (which is probably what they probably should do).

We are working tirelessly to open doors for entrepreneurs.

Unfortunately, Congressional Republicans have a different approach. Their plan would raise taxes on 6.1 million small business owners.

My plan cuts taxes for 4 million small business owners and provides tools to thrive.

Not the solution. We can rant, raise facts, and stomp our feet all day here, but we all know these facts. We can’t depend on the corporate media to do our work for us. Biden needs to break some corporate Democrats arms and pass more meaningful legislation that benefits the people, not the corporate donors. Then, once the wins are recorded, yell from his perch that he’s working for the people. He’s letting the Repugs control the message, with lies.

What choir? DU "isn't the microphone".

There is a post upthread that lists the suite of legislation and E.O.s that have been enacted so far - https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1014&pid=2910268

So you don't consider that "meaningful" or are not "wins"?

"Free speech" for Democrats is NOT FREE because we don't own the "microphone", so the list of what has been done will need to be in the form of paid advertising in every major media market, whether broadcast, print, or digital. And what happens when you have a list like that, people keel over because it's "too much". We saw that happen with Obama.

Biden, Harris, every Department/Agency head, and many in Congress have gone around the country and the world (and/or have spoken in their Districts/states) describing what has been done and it's not covered. The only mention might be as a footnote to a traffic report alerting commuters to "a motorcade" about to come through.

Did you know that last week, OSHA started hearings on creating a "permanent" standard to protect workers in healthcare environments - as a replacement for the recently expired ETS (Emergency Temporary Standard) that expired? I watched the 3 sessions last week and a 4th is due to happen tomorrow. Do you think Shmuck Toad is going to mention that?

The first two were heartbreaking. Link to the series here (they won't embed correctly for playback here) - https://www.osha.gov/coronavirus/healthcare/rulemaking

DETROIT – Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm will pay a visit to Michigan this week, where she served as governor for years, to “support American manufacturing” and promote clean energy initiatives and legislation.

The former Michigan governor, who served from 2003-2010, is scheduled to attend events in East Lansing and Detroit on Monday, May 2. The visit is meant to underscore the administration’s push toward clean energy, driving down energy costs and “prioritizing the historically underserved communities that have been at the center of the fight against climate change,” officials said.

Secretary Granholm will first visit East Lansing for a ribbon cutting event at 10 a.m. at Michigan State University, officials said. There, the university will unveil its new Facility for Rare Isotope Beams -- a user facility for the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science where scientists study the “properties of rare isotopes (that is, short-lived nuclei not normally found on Earth), nuclear astrophysics, fundamental interactions, and applications for society.”

The facility is home to the most powerful heavy-ion accelerator in the world. Granholm will be joined by other Michigan lawmakers, including Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Rep. Elissa Slotkin, in East Lansing,
