Capitol attack panel set to subpoena Trump allies, Republican Kinzinger says
Source: The Guardian
The House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol will decide in the next week or two whether to issue subpoenas trying to force Republican lawmakers to testify about Donald Trumps attempt to overturn the 2020 election, one of two Republicans on the panel said on Sunday. If that takes a subpoena, it takes a subpoena, Adam Kinzinger said. The Illinois congressman also told CBSs Face the Nation public hearings planned for June will aim to lay the whole story out in front of the American people
because ultimately, they have to be the judge of Trumps attempt to hold on to power.
Kinzinger and nine other House Republicans voted to impeach Trump over the Capitol attack, which a bipartisan Senate committee linked to seven deaths. But Senate Republicans stayed loyal, acquitting Trump, and Kinzinger is one of four anti-Trump House Republicans who have since announced their retirements. He and Liz Cheney of Wyoming are the only Republicans on the January 6 committee. The June hearings, Kinzinger said, will involve laying out what led to January 6, the lies after the election, fundraising, the 187 minutes the president basically sat in the Oval Office [as the Capitol was attacked]
the response by [the Department of Defense].
Its important for us to be able to put that in front of the American people because ultimately, they have to be the judge. The Department of Justice will make decisions based on information but the American people
have to take the work weve done and decide what they want to do with it or what they want to believe. Majorities of Republicans in Congress and in public polls believe or choose to support and repeat Trumps lie that Biden stole the presidency via electoral fraud.
Prominent Trump supporters in Congress who have advanced that lie and were involved in attempts to overturn the election before 6 January have refused to speak to the House committee. I wont say who I think we need to talk to yet, Kinzinger said. I mean, I think everybody needs to come and talk to us. Weve requested information from various members. In terms of whether we move forward with a subpoena, its going to be both a strategic tactical decision and the question of whether or not we can do that and get the information in time. Decisions we make every day.

I just heard on the radio that they are expecting to hold "8 hearings in June" and the radio report added "some in 'prime time'".
The schedule (dates/times) is not up yet on the January 6 Committee's website but I expect they have to sift through the lineup and get people scheduled, probably to cover "themes" or a "chronology" to tell the story. Am thinking they will go through June and may try to wrap it up and get a final report before the (and since this is an election year, they have to campaign too).
Per a story in March, they want to do an "interim report" in June in any case, where the schedule was pushed back from "public hearings" in April - the original aim (probably because of all the witnesses and depositions they ended up doing and I expect more might be deposed this month) -

The House select committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol is aiming to release an interim report of its findings this June, according to the panel's chairman. Meanwhile, former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro did not show up for his scheduled deposition, he confirmed to CBS News.
Committee chair Congressman Bennie Thompson told reporters Wednesday that investigators' goal was to wrap up depositions with witnesses by the beginning of April. The committee would then hold public hearings that month, which would be followed by an interim report in June, he said.
The committee's timeline could be pushed back, however, if investigators find out new information or seek testimony and records from additional witnesses.

Attack on U.S. Capitol caused $1.5 million in damage, prosecutors say

WASHINGTON, June 3 (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors on Wednesday said the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol caused $1.5 million in damages and indicated that individuals accused of participating in the riot will be asked to foot the bill. The Justice Department disclosed the $1.5 million figure in a letter to a defense lawyer for Paul Allard Hodgkins, a Florida man who pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of obstructing an official proceeding.
"Your client acknowledges that the riot that occurred on January 6, 2021, caused as of May 17, 2021, approximately $1,495,326.55 damage to the United States Capitol," stated the letter, sent on May 27 and made public on Wednesday. Hodgkins' plea agreement calls for him to "pay restitution to the Department of Treasury in the amount of $2,000," according to the letter, which was first reported by the Washington Post.
The Justice Department letter did not indicate how investigators arrived at the $1.5 million figure. A Justice Department spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The U.S. taxpayers shouldn't have to foot the bill for the smashed windows, broken doors, defaced statues and paintings, damaged desks, chairs, and file cabinets, stolen laptops, etc.

(205,503 posts)Though I realize that there was also incredible amounts of federal and personal property that was also stolen... We've seen them wielding flag poles and videos of them grinning, carrying lecterns and items from offices - not to mention the furniture that was used to barricade the doors from those "ordinary tourists." Every single one of them need to contribute - though I hold the "organizers" even more responsible, since these violent pilfering insurrectionists still contend that they were "invited" there - and that includes TFG who is sitting on enough to cover a lot of the damage.

It's gonna take awhile to work through the "lower level offenders", who are slowly turning on their "commanders" (organizers), which will provide fodder for grand juries to bring indictments. They are also finding the handful of "organizers" are who intend on either blowing it off and refusing to testify, or who probably plan to do the "I don't recall" routine and/or will plead the Fifth.
I did see an earlier report from Bennie Thompson (who is chairing the Committee), that about 90% of the witnesses have been cooperating.

(205,503 posts)And it's good news that the "lower level offenders" are scared enough to cooperate, but I won't consider this investigation to be concluded until the organizers are forced to testify - and are held accountable - too. Though some of them boasted of their plans right on camera thanks to being invited on Ari Melber's MSNBC show.

As the mob smashed our windows, bloodied our police and stormed the Capitol, Trump and his accomplices plotted to destroy Bidens majority in the electoral college and overthrow our constitutional order.
America will see how the coup and insurrection converged.
