(5,727 posts)The comedian appeared to lose his composure momentarily, and later joked: "That was a trans man," a call back to earlier words in his set that suggested he felt attacked by transgender people, and past material that has been criticized as transphobic.
Classy as always.

(1,336 posts)He may not have any other choice as a result of Chapelle's Sticks And Stones show. That is if he is a transexual or someone who is very very close to one. So he felt the need to make sacrifice upon himself. Very sad though.

(1,666 posts)An example had to be made about what will happen to those who attack comedians over their words. This outcome is Will Smiths fault. Hopefully future examples wont have to be made.

And upthread I have no idea why people are attacking/blaming Dave Chappelle for this.

(26,142 posts)You forgot to call LGBT thin-skinned and too sensitive.
After this guy attacked Chappelle, Chappelle made an anti-trans "joke."
I would ask if that bothered you, but you think such a punching-down piece of vile bigotry is a joke with "bite."
You really should be quite ashamed of yourself. You have defended these "jokes" over and over and over again, even with LGBT rights until threat of annihilation.

(12,604 posts)One of the best in the world, Don Rickles, made fun of me in the front row many years ago. Ragged on my looks, hair, etc. So what? It was funny. I learned as a child not to let a joke get to me. Don't like them then don't listen to the people who tell them.
I'm not in favor of jokes being made into LAWS.

(26,142 posts)I like when you admit you admit bigotry is fine and dandy when you winkwinknusgenudge it wrapped in faux comedy. It makes it easier to know who the people are okay with spitting on our rights.

(12,604 posts)And thats what it is. You can wrap yourself in whatever holier-than-thou cloth you like, but thats the bottom-line; in THIS country people can say shit you don't like.
Were you OK with Chappell's jokes about white people? Because he's done bits on them for years. Women? Same. And you probably haven't even listened to his routines on trans people; because he actually supports their rights.

(53,989 posts)But I also am not going to fail to acknowledge that some here seem to think his transphobia is "legitimate" comedy.

(10,156 posts)George Carlin for example. That was comedy. Chappelle isn't cracking jokes. He legit complains like an old person would.

(1,962 posts)Carlin was a genius and one of the funniest people ever because he punched up.
Chappelle punching down on the trans community (especially women) is not funny. It's bullying. And if bullying isn't funny elsewhere, why is it funny when it comes to us? Because it comes with a laugh track? Would Drumpf's 4 years in office magically become funny if it came with a laugh track?
That said, I can't applaud the attack, just as I can't applaud Will Smith. Mind you, we have no idea at all if this is over Chappelle's transphobia, or something else. For all we know, someone thought they could have a "viral moment" by going Will Smith on Chappelle. But if this was over his transphobia? I could applaud him if he found a way to get in his face and tell him off-stage how vile he is - with words. Going violent only led to physical harm, along with made the situation worse.

I suppose you get to decide, huh? So what's next? Us LGBTQ's need to just shut the fuck up again?

(26,142 posts)In this same thread. Gosh, folks attacked Chapelle because we can't take a joke with a little BITE. DUers say this in this thread. When our rights and lives are literally on the brink of annihilation.
IngridsLittleAngel
(1,962 posts)If us goddamned LGBTQ's would just shut the fuck up and take it (lay back and enjoy it?), there would be no issue. Who the hell were we to push back six months ago? Our rights, our safety, our lives are on the line, but, goddamnit, why can't we just take a fucking joke?!
To all the people who can't wait to beat us over the head with Chappelle yet again: Since comedy has no rules and no limits and no boundaries, and everyone should just take a fucking joke: How would Roe v Wade jokes go over right now? How about rape jokes... ever? Holocaust jokes? Slavery jokes?
But it's a-ok to dehumanize trans people and attack LGBTQ's the way he does?
Some things are not funny. Bullying is not funny.
But, I know... Fuck us. We're not even real people anyway.

Vile, crude, disgusting misogynistic jokes. Got attention for a while, shock value I suppose, but in the end had a very short lived career and is now just a footnote in the history of comedy.
Comedians have a right to be not funny. And we have the right to reject them for it. If this is the extent of Chapelles comedy then he, too, will have a short lived career.

(101,364 posts)The "joke" is that some people hate Roma people, and they were murdered in the Holocaust, so some people are happy that they were killed. It's not funny, but it seems to be making light of the hatred.
