Putin speaks at Victory Day parade on Moscow's Red Square

Source: Reuters

May 9 (Reuters) - Following are quotes from a televised speech on Monday by President Vladimir Putin at Moscow's annual Victory Day parade on Red Square, translated from Russian to English by Reuters:

ON SECURITY GUARANTEES DEMANDED BY PUTIN

"Despite disagreements in international relations, Russia has always advocated the creation of a system of equal and indivisible security, a system that is vital for the entire international community.

"In December last year, we proposed the conclusion of an agreement on security guarantees. Russia called on the West to enter an honest dialogue, in search of reasonable compromise solutions, to take each other’s interests into account. It was all in vain."

"NATO countries did not want to listen to us, meaning that they in fact had entirely different plans, and we saw this. Openly, preparations were under way for another punitive operation in Donbas, the invasion of our historical lands, including Crimea.

I can't believe anything he says after recalling how the Russians said they had no intention to invade Ukraine just a few months ago.

we were being naive if we were choosing to believe analysts claiming Putin would not invade. I was chided for my ignorance.

actions of evil, power crazed, nut jobs because their actions don’t seem to make sense. It’s the “but that’d be crazy!” crowd. I went to a lecture given by an FBI profiler who caught a serial killer. He said you have to think like they do.

I have my hopes set on that...The operation may be the reason that stops the invasion of Ukraine.

Since 1990, during the time of the USSR, their VE day has morphed from a win by the USSR and the "Soviets" to a win by Russians.

Ignore that Belorussian and Ukrainian soldiers probably exceeded the # of Russian soldiers, or more Ukrainians died during the war than Russians. It was a *Russian* victory over the German fascists. Not Ukrainian and Russian. Not Tuvan and Russian. Just plain "Russian."

Today it wasn't a Russian victory.

It was a victory by "Soviet people".

Haven't heard that expression uttered in current speech for many a year, except in quotes from pre-1991 Russian texts.

There were *no* "Soviet people." There were Estonians, Russians, Latvian, Mordva, Georgians ... Ukrainians, Latvians.... In 1991, collapse of the USSR + 2 seconds, this was a fact widely and loudly trumpeted by Russian-speaking everythings. Estonians, Latvians, Georgians, Azerbaijanis, etc., etc.

Suddenly we're back to "Soviet people"?

This is a sharply discordant note. Ignore the Ukrainian war. Think about more than the present. What does resurrecting *that* term mean when coming from Putlin's mouth?

Justice matters.

Disgusting pig* keeps targeting women and children for no reason at all (other than stealing Ukraine's natural resources and causing famine in many poor countries that depend on Ukraine's agriculture to barely feed their women and children).

*Apologies to real-life pigs for they never murder anyone for personal gain.

When Putin bombed apartments in Moscow to seize power. Western leaders did nothing because they saw financial opportunities. The banks were more than happy to skim off dirty money and politicians welcomed trade deals, as well as personal rewards and considerable help with elections/referendums.
It is the self serving deceit of those politicians that brought about, Brexit, Trump and made Covid such a devastating pandemic. Russia has spent decades undermining political order in other countries, and politicians turned a blind eye, as long as it benefited them.
