Jan. 6 Panel Subpoenas 5 Republican Representatives

Source: New York Times

WASHINGTON — The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol issued subpoenas on Thursday to five Republican members of Congress, including Representative Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader, who had refused to meet with the panel voluntarily.

The committee’s leaders had been reluctant to issue subpoenas to their fellow lawmakers. That is an extraordinarily rare step for most congressional committees to take, though the House Ethics Committee, which is responsible for investigating allegations of misconduct by members, is known to do so.

The panel said it was demanding documents and testimony from Mr. McCarthy, of California, who engaged in a heated phone call with Mr. Trump during the Capitol violence; Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, who coordinated a plan to try to replace the acting attorney general who had resisted Mr. Trump’s false claims of widespread fraud; Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio, who was deeply involved in the effort to fight the election results; Representative Andy Biggs of Arizona, the former leader of the ultraconservative House Freedom Caucus; and Representative Mo Brooks of Alabama, who has said Mr. Trump has continued to seek an unlawful reinstatement to office for more than a year.

All five have refused requests for voluntary interviews about the roles they played in the buildup to the attack by supporters of the former president who believed his lie of widespread election fraud. The subpoenas come as the committee is ramping up for a series of public hearings in June to reveal its findings. The eight hearings are slated to take place over several weeks beginning June 9, some during prime time in an effort to attract a large television audience.

And when they STILL balk and defy the subpoenas, speak LOUDLY and FREQUENTLY about what that means. And we all know.

It just has to be made obvious to as much of the public as possible.

And repeated! A LOT. Because it’s necessary!

They don't have to wait till EVERYTHING is done if they have good evidence on individual people. CHARGE those people NOW. Then keep on gathering evidence on others.
Because if this becomes another miserable failure then the Trumpers will all say "SEE! They had nothing!"

The hearings start on June 9. This is all about the drip, drip of information that will bring the average person around to the truth. We here on DU need to remember that the average person doesn’t know a quarter of what we do. They don’t read the news every day like we do.

We have to bring them along to understand. That’s where we are in the process.

Because nearly everyone else around them has offered theirs. What this move will do is show probable cause for criminal referrals and formulation of GJs if they are not already in place. It's a bolster to any case the DOJ may be bringing. Perhaps simply pro forma.

It also shows that they have made it up the ladder to the inner circle and this is part of the squeeze... just before the public hearings get rolling.

I need to stock up on popcorn.

the J6 committee has the info...there's a certain amount of satisfaction in taunting them, and the committee knows damn well that any testimony coming from the loathsome five will be a series of screeching insults, threats, amnesia, taking the 5th..in other words, totally useless except for the optics of belligerent assholes throwing temper tantrums..

This looks like taunting to me too.

I believe they do have the goods.

What this also signals is that they are not afraid of what the seditionist motherfuckers might do to them should they regain power. And to me, that signals they really do have the goods. Like, ironclad goods. Otherwise (you know Democrats), they'd be so afraid of what might happen to them next year if they lose the House that they wouldn't pursue this.

plus the committee knows they're not going to testify and that alone makes them look guilty as hell.. what are they afraid of?/what do they have to hide?..except the J6 committee has the info..the staffers and aides, barricaded in a closet, calling loved one to say goodbye on January 6 had them lining up to tell their stories to the committee...remember congress critters are never alone and they are always being recorded...and there's a outside chance that Mo Brooks might honor the subpoena..he's obviously pissed at Trump for not endorsing him..and then there's McCarthy..Burns and Martin's released recording have him looking like a weathervane of a fool...he just might want to the lie his story straight..who knows

U.S. Rep. Scott Perry, 4 other GOP lawmakers subpoenaed in Jan. 6 riot investigation

Updated: May. 12, 2022, 1:31 p.m. | Published: May. 12, 2022, 1:29 p.m.

By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — House investigators said Thursday they have issued subpoenas to House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy and four other GOP lawmakers as part of their probe into the violent Jan. 6 insurrection, an extraordinary step that has little precedent and is certain to further inflame partisan tensions over the 2021 attack.

The Jan. 6 panel’s subpoenas for McCarthy, R-Calif., and Republican Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Andy Biggs of Arizona and Mo Brooks of Alabama come as the investigation is winding down and as the panel prepares for a series of public hearings this summer.

The committee has been investigating McCarthy’s conversations with then-President Donald Trump the day of the attack and meetings that the four other lawmakers had with the White House as Trump and his aides conspired how to overturn his defeat.

Congressional subpoenas for sitting members of Congress, especially for a party leader, are almost without precedent in recent decades. The panel had previously asked for voluntary cooperation from the five men, along with a handful of other GOP lawmakers, but all of them refused to speak with the panel.

Of the 800 plus that HAVE testified and with that, tons of testimony exposing these very same assholes, they have been given a fair chance to dispute it. So now any testimony putting them directly in the crosshairs of plotting and assisting in the coup to overthrow the US Government, is what the indictments must be. You had a fair chance to defend yourselves, so shut the fuck up when DOJ brings charges with all the evidence that was willfully brought to the committee.
