78,000 pounds of infant formula arrives in US

Source: AP

By MICHAEL CONROY

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Enough specialty infant formula for more than half a million baby bottles arrived Sunday in Indianapolis.

The formula, weighing 78,000 pounds (35,380 kilograms), was being transported by military plane, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters aboard Air Force One as President Joe Biden flew from South Korea to Japan.

It is the first of several flights carrying infant formula from Europe expected this weekend to relieve the deepening shortage in the U.S. The flights were authorized by Biden.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was in Indianapolis to greet the arrival of the first shipment in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis is closer to more red states than to blue states (ie Illinois, Michigan). I assume that other planes will go to other distribution centers.

They could place it in a store and the entire supply would be gone in a few hours even if it was diligently rationed.

Let's go light and say 1 pound each instead of the more common 20-24 oz cans. That's 78,000 cans.

It's not uncommon for parents to buy 2-4 cans at a time. Let's go 2 cans. That's 2 pounds per purchase. Or 39,000 purchases. That's 39 customers for each of your 1,000 stores. In my city, which is just a nice mid-size city that is not some metropolis like Chicago or Phoenix, there are a lot more than 39 customers seeking this stuff at my local Target, Walmart and grocery stores. Is my city only allocated one store for delivery or does it receive 2? 5? 10? No matter what number you choose, I guarantee you that other cities of my size or larger are not going to have enough.

More shipments are coming from Germany, as well, until the Defense Production Act gets more domestic formula produced. "As soon as possible" is already late, I realize. But at least Biden is trying.

My favorite social media post is to thank Trump for the shortage.

"It is the first of several flights carrying infant formula from Europe." The operative word here is "several."

So, your argument is moot.

Red states get first dibs.

The article says this:

Indianapolis was chosen because it is a Nestle distribution hub. The formula will be offloaded into FedEx semitractor-trailers and taken to a Nestle distribution center about a mile away where the company will do a standard quality control check before distributing the supplies to hospitals, pharmacies and doctor’s offices, according to an administration official on site.

Air Force planes are transporting the initial batch of formula because no commercial flights were available this weekend.

so this doesn't happen again? Please? I know Biden tends to lean towards trade restrictions due to his close ties with labor, but international trade, particularly with similarly industrialized nations, has certain advantages. Backstops in case of shortages from domestic production is only one.

I was amazed at how this was ALL President Biden's fault...."incompetence....they knew and did nothing...more anger from parents of babies that rely on formula...blah, blah, blah...."

The Democratic talking heads had better get out there and start deflecting this shit storm. Crap like this sticks in the feeble minds of disgruntled voters. The voter is too fucking simple minded to realize the orange puss-bucket couldn't care less...unless there is money in it for him or his grifter family and KKKlan.

We truly deserve what we elect. If gQp's gain control of Congress, we haven't seen anything yet on how fucked up government can be.

But a Democrat spoke after that and I calmed down. Then Terry Moron said the other thing I've seen a lot of that makes me scream: Abbot's problem was in February, why didn't the government do something?

The rule that Democrats have crystal balls and can see the future, so if they fail to anticipate every bad thing or that things will last longer than expected it's because they don't care and are worse than Republicans, who are evidently innocent bystanders to all the bad things.
