Finally! Someone with a backbone to stand up to their own team when enough is enough!
Don McLean isnt going to support gun culture after the tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.
The legendary singer, who was the voice behind the 1971 hit American Pie and plenty of other memorable tracks throughout his decades-long career, had been scheduled to performing this coming weekend at the National Rifle Associations convention in Houston, Texas.
However, on Wednesday, the 76-year-old star announced that he was pulling out of the convention, and pulling the plug on his performance.

(26,044 posts)If you look at his work on the Clearwater Foundation and the lyrics of his initial albums, he was quite leftist. Don't know much about his political stances since then, though.

(2,026 posts)The fact he was even going to do a corporate gig for the NRA says everything that needs to be said. The Uvalde murders just happen to coincide with his big tour going on currently so it was definitely a business decision. He says today's music is worthless. Ive listened to interviews with him for decades, he's not what his marketing department presents. Not saying he's not a semi gifted song writer, but he ain't all that. his political leanings are very apparent if you look close enough, that's all.
Bye bye got my slice of American pie

(11,100 posts)I am disappointed that he had agreed to perform at the convention. Nevertheless, I am pleased that there came a point where he could not do so.

I got all my songs back and I got all my publishing, I own everything. And its a very very important song catalogue which I am the sole owner of. But I fought off a lot of people who were involved in getting percentages from me for a long time.
McLean compares these people he referred to as haters and destroyers with his ex-wife and daughter; Patrisha Shnier and Jackie McLean.
Dons marriage to Shnier broke down in 2016 after almost 30 years together. The pair split following an incident in 2016 which resulted in McLean being arrested amid claims of abuse. Don pleaded guilty to four of six charges brought against him, one of which was domestic violence assault which was dismissed by plea bargain agreement.
Following the charges, the folk singer denied he ever assaulted his wife and stated that he pleaded guilty in order to avoid having the story hit the papers and to protect the familys privacy.
Both his daughter and Shnier have publicly stated that McLean was emotionally and mentally abusive towards them over the years, claims he has denied.
They are hateful and they are destroyers. And they are trying to destroy everything that I do and thats the difference and thats why I left to begin with, says the 76-year old who remarks that its the same syndrome shared by those who tried to steal from him.
The musician also says that despite the claims of abuse he is not afraid of being cancelled.
Im not afraid of being cancelled. Gods gonna cancel me pretty soon anyway, he says as he proposes that the rise in these accusations comes due to the power saying destructive things about somebody can wield. And it didnt have that before.
I think theres an atmosphere of fear, similar to the atmosphere in the 1950s when peoples political beliefs could get them cancelled. Immediately.
And thats the environment we're in. It's just a different way of manifesting. So theres this fear and therefore people really dont let you know what they think about anything because theyre always afraid of being turned in.
Im an old geezer and I have money and Ill say what I want to say.
The singer-songwriter continues to scoop up accolades and garner plaudits; recently he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Well thats kind of like a general absolution in the church or something like that. It washes away a lot of sins, jokes McLean. Youre now part of the great HillBilly heaven.
He described it as one of the biggest and most exciting things to have happened in his storied career. The veteran musician attributes his success to his instincts.
I was never trying to be something that I wasnt. I knew who I was and I knew what I wanted and it turned out okay. But things happened because of my instincts.

(2,430 posts)...and very glad to learn he has decided not to. I have not followed his career but his music touched me as a teen and American Pie, to this day, is my all time favorite rock song. Ya can't dance to it--or at least I can't--all ya can do is listen to it. Full of nostalgic images, it became popular when we were leaving childhood behind into a world that was scary and guaranteed to be difficult. A few years later, Reagan became president. The song was prescient. I still love it.

(1,384 posts)'American Pie' Singer Don McLean Pleads Guilty to Domestic Violence Charges Against Estranged Wife
Songwriter Don McLean perhaps best known for his classic 1971 song American Pie accepted a plea deal in Maine on Thursday for several domestic violence misdemeanors against his estranged wife, PEOPLE learns.
McLean pleaded guilty to misdemeanor counts of domestic violence assault, domestic violence criminal threatening, criminal mischief, and criminal restraint stemming from a mid-January incident, McLeans defense attorney tells PEOPLE.
McLean, 70, was arrested six months ago at his home in Camden for domestic violence against his wife, Patrisha, who told investigators the musician has had a violent temper for decades.
She said in a January statement that McLean terrorized her for hours the night of his arrest. The statement added, For the first 10 years or so, his rage was unfathomably deep and very scary.

(6,544 posts)Hes been a member until now? Really? 20- shootings this year alone, but this one is the straw that broke the camels back? Why not Buffalo? Why not 10 years ago? Why was he a member of that fascist organization in the first place? Sounds more like hes trying to get his name in the media. Crawl back into obscurity, dude, you already sold out on your American pie.
