Grand jury indicts former Trump adviser Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress
Source: CNN
A federal grand jury has indicted former Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro for contempt of Congress after he refused to cooperate in the House January 6 committee's investigation.
According to the Justice Department, Navarro will make an appearance in court Friday at 2:30 p.m. ET in Washington.
He faces two contempt counts: one for his failure to produce documents demanded by the committee and the second for failing to show up for subpoenaed testimony before House investigators.
The House had voted in April to refer Navarro to the Justice Department for not complying with the select committee's February subpoena.

The indictment comes after Navarro revealed Monday that he had been subpoenaed by federal prosecutors who were seeking documents related to his decision. Navarro said in an interview with MSNBC Thursday night that he "responded" to the Justice Department, but he declined to say he would be willing to turn over the documents requested by prosecutors.
The subpoena from the US Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia specifically requests "all documents relating to the subpoena dated February 9, 2022, that you received from the House Select Committee to investigate the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, including but not limited to any communications with former President Trump and/or his counsel or representatives."
I look forward to seeing how this indictment is tied to the grand jury subpoena.
In addition, the lawsuit filed by Navarro was objected to by the court on the court's own motion A person who represents himself has a fool for a client. The petition filed by Navarro was so bad that it was funny. The judge read the petition and told Navarro that his petition is a piece of garbage and to refile something that makes sense. This two page ruling makes me smile

What's the 1st thing a lawyer tells his client? Say nothing. Jeezus those Trump people are stupid.

Former Trump White House official Peter Navarro has been indicted on two counts of criminal contempt of Congress after refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, the Justice Department announced Friday.
Navarro, who was a trade adviser to Trump, also revealed he received a grand jury subpoena in a lawsuit he filed Tuesday against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the bipartisan House committee.
Navarro, 72, is charged with one contempt count involving his refusal to appear for a deposition and another involving his refusal to produce documents to the committee, according to the U.S. Attorneys Office for Washington. The indictment was returned Thursday and unsealed Friday, and Navarro is to make his initial appearance this afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
The Jan. 6 committee subpoenaed Navarro in February seeking records and testimony from the former trade adviser, who has written and publicly discussed the effort to develop a strategy to delay or overturn certification of the 2020 election.

Peter Navarro, a White House adviser to former President Donald J. Trump who defied a subpoena to provide information to the special House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, was charged on Friday with contempt of Congress. Prosecutors say that Mr. Navarro, 72, was issued a subpoena by the House committee on Feb. 9, but failed to appear for a deposition or provide documents to congressional investigators.
The indictment charges him with two counts of contempt that each carry a maximum sentence of a year in prison, as well as a fine of up to $100,000. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
A former White House trade adviser who undertook extensive efforts to keep Mr. Trump in power after the 2020 election, Mr. Navarro is the second high-ranking former presidential aide to be charged with contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena from the House committee. In November, Stephen K. Bannon, a former top aide to Mr. Trump, was indicted on similar charges.
The indictment against Mr. Navarro came nearly two months after the House voted on mostly party lines to recommend criminal charges against him. Lawmakers decided in the same vote to recommend a contempt indictment against another of Mr. Trumps top aides, Dan Scavino Jr. The House has also recommended that Mark Meadows, the former White House chief of staff, be charged with contempt. But the Justice Department has yet to take action on the criminal referrals against Mr. Meadows or Mr. Scavino.

(129,096 posts)were (aside from the children), the closest "working stiffs" to 45. Makes me wonder if they were already under an active (perhaps meatier) investigation before the J6 subpoena, thus the delay from DOJ so far.
I sometimes remind myself of Meadows' predecessors - Preibus, Kelly, and Mulvaney.

(7,282 posts)I'll hold back on my pessismism and attempt to maintain some hope, that your suggestion may just be what's going on.
A very challenging effort on my part, as I've lived through too many egregious acts of crimes committed by high officials over the past century, decades and in particular these past few years under the previous socio/psychopath's reign of terror.
Many conducted largely in the open. It's difficult for me. And SCOtUS is in my view, largely illegitimate branch of our government.
I hope the DOJ can overcome the long lasting obstacles entrenched in that department since it's inception over a
150 years ago.

(129,096 posts)but I sometimes console myself in considering that Fitzmas (and Patrick Fitzgerald) happened under a GOP Attorney General (Ashcroft, who recused and punted to Comey) and similarly Mueller, who had to operate under another corrupt GOP Attorney General (Barr). So...
You did have a handful of AGs like Ramsey Clark (and of course briefly Bobby Kennedy), among a few others.
What is going on now with J6 is unprecedented for the entire 235 history of this country. Literally.
