McCormick Concedes to Oz in Pennsylvania GOP Senate Primary
Source: US News and World Report/AP
HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) Former hedge fund CEO David McCormick conceded the Republican primary in Pennsylvania for U.S. Senate to celebrity heart surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, ending his campaign Friday night as he acknowledged an ongoing statewide recount wouldn't give him enough votes to make up the deficit. McCormick said he had called Oz to concede.
Its now clear to me with the recount now largely complete that we have a nominee, McCormick said at a campaign party at a Pittsburgh hotel. Tonight is really about all us coming together. Before the recount, Oz led McCormick by 972 votes, or 0.07 percentage points, out of 1.34 million votes counted in the May 17 primary. The Associated Press has not declared a winner in the race because an automatic recount is underway. Friday's development sets up a general election between Oz, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump, and Democrat John Fetterman in what is expected to be one of the nation's premier Senate contests. The race could help determine control of the closely divided chamber.
Fetterman, the state's lieutenant governor, acknowledged earlier Friday in a statement that he nearly died when he suffered a stroke just days before his primary. He said he had ignored warning signs for years and a doctor's advice to take blood thinners. Oz, who is best known as the host of daytime TVs The Dr. Oz Show, had to overcome millions of dollars in attack ads and misgivings among hard-line Trump backers about his conservative credentials on guns, abortion, transgender rights and other core Republican issues.
The 61-year-old Oz leaned on Trump's endorsement as proof of his conservative bona fides, while Trump attacked Oz's rivals and maintained that Oz has the best chance of winning in November in the presidential battleground state. Rivals made Ozs dual citizenship in Turkey an issue in the race. If elected, Oz would be the nations first Muslim senator.

We now have 1 candidate, born, raised and stayed in Pennsylvania and the other a guy who parachuted in from NJ and still lives there. Can't wait for Dem operatives to stake out Oz's "residence" in PA and the photos/videos of him not living there.

(16,927 posts)Fetterman is the better candidate because of what he BELIEVES - what he PREACHES - and what he PRACTICES!
I know - I'm being 'go high' (as former First Lady Michelle preached) but DAMMIT - we've got the candidate that is CLEARLY our best choice this round - and we just need to preach how he IS the right one to lead us into the 'better place' and doing what is best for our state and our country.
I LOVE the fact that the Pukes are still struggling regarding their candidate - along with the fact that the Pukes have nominated a serious NUT JOB to be the Governor.! They're HANDING IT TO US, FOLKS!!!!!! We CANNOT screw this up in any way, shape, or form!
No matter what - this WILL be a SERIOUS Get-Out-The-Vote campaign - and we've got to get out there and make sure we are working to Make America Great - after Trump F-ed it Up!

(15,286 posts)But there are plenty of PACs who will be more than happy to dirty up Oz and finish the job McCormick's supporters started.

(16,927 posts)(yeah, just for the fun of it, 'Google' "Santorum" - bunches of fun, kinda' like the old days when you'd call to ask if they had "Prince Albert in a can!" .......
Oops, sorry, got off track there!
Anyhow, Ricky 'claimed' to live in Penn Hills, PA - a suburb of Pittsburgh. Ricky has what, 8, 10 kids now, all dressed in table clothes that Mama made into clothes for the darlings. But, his "RESIDENCE" in Penn Hills was a 2-bedroom place on a postage-stamp lot.
OK - fine, go for the "Little House on the Prairie" thing - except - HE DID NOT LIVE THERE! He lived in a 2-gazillion square foot mansion in Virginia (to be 'closer to his work').
But here's the REAL 'pizzer' - he 'claimed' his residence in Penn Hills as his primary residence AND enrolled his 'tribe' into "On-Line" schooling (yeah, you know, the favorite thing of "Sweet Betsy DeVos" and the other cons raping the school systems of the US) - charging the Penn Hills School District thousands of dollars to provide his brood with on-line education - costing the distict the money to educate them while he's in a castle in Virginia.
This 'residence' stuff is serious shit - and we need to pay attention and really look at who's in it for OUR benefit.
FETTERMAN is the REAL THING - don't pass it up!

McCormick's a business-friendly R and like them doesn't care that much about the hot button social issues. He's Toomey v2.0.
McCormick should've let Oz be the "Trumper" in the race. I think he'd have gotten more votes in SE Pa and the urban areas doing that. The Trump cultists only care about voting for Trump, not his endorsed candidates.
Oz, I think, benefitted from his years on TV where voters discounted to some degree the Trumpy stuff based on what they saw and heard for themselves on the show.

(3,860 posts)Of course, there are a lot of idiot Republicans in Pennsylvania, too, but I'm betting Oz doesn't pick up a lot of marginal Republicans and few independents.

So I think the handwriting was on the wall (and we are the biggest city/county in the state) and there are probably still some "moderate" (sane) Republicans left in the city.
HOWEVER to add one of your options, I read something that may have been why - Sen. Bob Casey's seat is up in 2024 so given McCormick has deep pockets, he'll probably try again.
