Explosions rock Ukraine's capital Kyiv, battle rages on in east
Source: Reuters
KYIV, June 5 (Reuters) - Kyiv was rocked by several explosions early on Sunday, the mayor of the Ukrainian capital said, a day after officials said its troops had recaptured a swath of the eastern battlefield city of Sievierodonetsk in a counter-offensive against Russia. "Several explosions in Darnytskyi and Dniprovskyi districts of the capital," Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote on the Telegram messaging app. "Services are already working on site."
A Reuters witness saw smoke in the city after the explosions. At least one person was hospitalised but no deaths had been reported as of early Sunday, Klitschko said. Other officials said the Russian bombardment appeared to be targeting the railway network. Despite continuing Russian attacks on Ukraine and the widespread destruction, Kyiv has been relatively calm in recent weeks after Moscow turned its military focus to the east and south, especially an intense battle for Sievierodonetsk.
Russia has concentrated its forces on the factory city for one of the biggest ground battles of the war, with Moscow appearing to bet its campaign on capturing one of the two eastern provinces it claims on behalf of separatist proxies. Serhiy Gaidai, the governor of the Luhansk region that includes Sievierodonetsk, said on Sunday Ukrainian forces controlled about half the city after recapturing a large chunk from Russian troops.
"It had been a difficult situation, the Russians controlled 70% of the city, but over the past two days they have been pushed back," Gaidai said on Ukraine's television. "The city is now, more or less, divided in half." The claims could not be independently verified.

(129,084 posts)but controlling the commodities like the grains. Russia has it's own oil, although it's difficult to extract. But thanks to one of their buddies (not the obvious one but one who has dropped out of the news cycle) - Rex Tillerson - they were able to get some much-needed tech from us to help do it.

(129,084 posts)I remember reading some article years ago about how ExxonMobil went in there to show them how to extract from deep sources - e.g., beneath and within the hills/mountains of Siberia (it's basically shale oil). Pootie and his buddies went on to become oil barons.

(10,011 posts)I believe that extending this war is inhumane to Ukrainians. While Russian soldiers are dying, it is Ukrainian soldiers and civilians who are paying the price of this illegal war with their lives, their homes, and their cities. And soon, millions more will be paying the price without enough food to eat.
I found the arguments presented in this piece fairly compelling. The UN and NATO can step in now and secure the shipments of Ukrainian grains. Why are they asking Putin for permission?
I also believe that its time for NATO to step up and end this war. I know the threat of nuclear weapons, but those weapons go both ways, and now that government and military leaders around Putin have seen that the war is not really going well for them, would they really launch nuclear weapons knowing that the retaliation would be against them in Russia, not Ukraine?
Allowing this war to continue helps no one.

(7,772 posts)This could be a classic WW I or WW II strategy on the part of the Russians.
WWI, Verdun, Germans plan to 'bleed the French white', which worked, but it also put a hell of a dent in the German resources.
Most worrysome, though, is Russian tactics in WW II, once Zhukov was in command.
The Stalingrad and Kursk battles are the classic examples. The Russians would use second line units to chew up resources (men/material) of the Germans, at the expense of the Russian units, of course. Then, a flanking counterattack, using massed artillery and their crack units would surround a large part of the German units, those that could not escape.
I would advise the Ukrainians to withdraw, from the Sievierodonetsk area, give up ground to straighten their lines in this region, and concentrate on pushing the Russians back to east of the Dnieper, a natural line of defense.
Time and space. Time is on the Ukranian's side.
