A California man carrying at least one weapon near Brett Kavanaughs Maryland home has been taken into custody by police, after telling officers he wanted to kill the Supreme Court justice, according to people familiar with the investigation.
The individual, described as a man in his mid-20s, was found to be carrying at least one weapon and burglary tools, these people said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation. Police were apparently notified that the person might pose a threat to the justice, but it was not immediately clear who provided the initial tip, these people said. The man apparently did not make it on to Kavanaughs property in Montgomery County, but he was stopped on a nearby street, these people said.
Two people familiar with the investigation said the initial evidence indicates the man was angry about the leaked draft of an opinion by the Supreme Court signaling the court is preparing to overturn Roe. v. Wade, the 49-year-old decision that guaranteed a persons constitutional right to have an abortion. He was also angry over a recent spate of mass shootings, those people said.
The story is developing and will be updated.
Robert Barnes and Isaac Stanley-Becker contributed to this report.

Something just doesn't sound right about this---too conveniently timed and just what GOP wants to distract from 1/6 hearings. Would not surprise me if police were complicit in sending out a false story.

In the meantime, screw Kavanaugh and McConnell. Suck it up, butter cup. How's it feel?

paulkienitz
(1,296 posts)because they think the only edge they've got left is that they have more guns and more willingness to use force. They know their cause is lost in the end if it's left to legitimate democratic discourse, so they turn to fantasies in which the race war they expect to fight becomes the biblical battle of Armageddon. If we try to respond in kind with guns we only reinforce that, pushing them toward armed uprising, which means we either end up in a brutal dictatorship or we shed a lot of blood preventing that. We can't be thinking that assassination attempts are a shortcut to reducing the power of the right wing.

I mean, that would explain why the guy actually called the police and told him what he was about to do. He didn't really want to kill a GOP Supreme Court justice, or he would have hung up the phone and rushed in to BK's house and done the deed before the cops got there.
LiberatedUSA

I feel like they haven't really thought it through. If they get the one-party-in-power-forever that they want, with unregulated capitalism, the end of all social services, no public education, no taxes on the billionaires, and their policy of to-hell-with-climate-change-we'll-be-dead-in-a-hundred-years-anyway . . . Then what? I guess they don't care about anything beyond their own life spans.

The New York Times reports:
Nicholas John Roske, 26, of Simi Valley, Calif., was charged with attempted murder after two U.S. deputy marshals saw him step out of taxicab in front of the justices house in Chevy Chase, Md., early Wednesday morning, dressed in black and carrying a suitcase, according to the U.S. attorneys office in Maryland.
Mr. Roske saw the two deputies, who were standing next to their parked car, and walked down the street, according to a federal affidavit.
Soon after, the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center received a call from Mr. Roske, who said he was having suicidal thoughts and had a firearm in his suitcase, according to the affidavit. He said he had traveled from California to Maryland to kill a specific United States Supreme Court Justice, the affidavit said.
CBS News reports:
Police found in his belongings a black tactical chest rig and tactical knife, a Glock 17 pistol with two magazines and ammunition, pepper spray, zip ties, a hammer, screwdriver, nail punch, crow bar, pistol light, duct tape, hiking boots with padding on the outside of the soles, and other items, the affidavit states.
After he was transported to the police department in Bethesda, Roske told a detective he was upset about the recent leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion in a blockbuster abortion case and the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
Roske indicated that he believed the Justice that he intended to kill would side with Second Amendment decisions that would loosen gun control laws, according to the affidavit.
