WASHINGTON (AP) Thousands of people rallied on the National Mall and across the United States on Saturday in a renewed push for gun control measures after recent deadly mass shootings from Uvalde, Texas, to Buffalo, New York, that activists say should compel Congress to act.
Enough is enough, District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser told the second March for Our Lives rally in her city. I speak as a mayor, a mom, and I speak for millions of Americans and Americas mayors who are demanding that Congress do its job. And its job is to protect us, to protect our children from gun violence.
Speaker after speaker in Washington called on senators, who are seen as a major impediment to legislation, to act or face being voted out of office, especially given the shock to the nations conscience after 19 children and two teachers were killed May 24 at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde.
If our government cant do anything to stop 19 kids from being killed and slaughtered in their own school, and decapitated, its time to change who is in government, said David Hogg, a survivor of the 2018 shooting that killed 17 students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

It must be painful for gun nuts to live in a country with normal human beings that they are not supposed to shoot.

How about murderous thugs. Hopefully only in their demented minds.
But, as we know, with lax gun laws, they can easily make their dreams a reality.

(4,554 posts)I was part of the March for Our Lives in a town near me today. I drove 17 miles to my nearest large city of Potsdam NY and marched alongside people of all ages. High school students all the way thru senior citizens. We had some really energizing speakers that got the group fired up and then we did a pretty darn long march thru downtown Potsdam. The Potsdam police deserve a shout out for doing a great job of traffic control. The continued to be present for each time we crossed a street, and kept traffic at bay. We had at least one news videographer (WWNY Channel 7 out of Watertown NY) there along with a couple other news people taking pictures. Could not tell who they were affiliated with.
Once again, I forgot to bring throat lozenges for the leaders doing the chants. We stopped at the High school where a gal read out all the names of the victims from the Uvalde TX Shooting. At a stop in front of the post office, the same gal read out the names of the Buffalo, NY shooting victims. In each location, another person rang a bell for each name called. She wore white gloves as she rang the bell.
I have to say, for a relatively small town, Potsdam NY knows how to come together and make it happen.
I finally got a T-shirt since they were offered for a small donation. I now have a March For our Lives T-shirt for the next march. We certainly dont want another march, but at this point, its inevitable.
I look forward to others stories about today. I feel really good and happy that I was a part of it. I have a sun burn and also gave myself permission to have ice cream for dessert tonight since we walked for at least an hour I think. Whew!!

I chatted with them for a minute. Nice bunch of people who had answers!

(2,744 posts)I'm a member of a local league in Texas. We try to make sure our website is a complete voting resource (applications to register, to vote by mail, all the who, what, when, where information) for our entire county. The county elections website is much harder to find info on than ours and it's not as complete.
Our information is accurate, helpful, and official sources are linked. But I'm surprised how many people have never heard of the League of Women Voters and have no idea about the great resource and services they provide. These are the granddaughters and great granddaughters of suffragists, and they may look like ordinary people but I find them amazing. They do so much.

(45,514 posts)since they grew up with mass shootings. A tipping point will be reached eventually. Even more gun owners are supporting some improvements these days like red flag laws or a permit system. There are folks who are concerned about suicidal friends and help them get treatment before something bad happens.

It will never end so we will not give in to anything that further suppresses our rights, remember Heller has designated the individuals right to posses firearms so it is now on the same level as freedom of speech"
This is my best recall of a lecture I was given in Pahrump Nevada by a Trump supporter with the largest collection of pro gun stickers on his truck I have ever seen.

(26,316 posts)the ownership of guns currently will remain in jeopardy of being tossed out by the courts due to the 2nd Amendment.
If however we amend the Constitution and bring it up to date by allowing the government to have at least a little say in limiting who can own guns as well as what types of guns then the risk of the courts tossing new laws is greatly reduced.
Now how to approach getting a new amendment passed is going to be the tricky part and my recommendation would be to make sure to get the message out that people that hunt are in no danger of losing hunting rifles and hammer that big time.
That way it makes it more difficult for groups like the NRA to try and frame it as the government trying to take food out of peoples mouths which is part of the strategy the NRA has been using for years against new gun laws.

WASHINGTON Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in hundreds of protests across the country Saturday to push lawmakers to take action on gun violence in the wake of recent mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.
..............................................
Rep. Cori Bush, D-Mo., shared a story of having been in an abusive relationship when she was younger in which her partner shot at her multiple times. That moment when gun violence strikes is so dramatic and so preventable, she said. I didnt know when he would stop.
The rallies were organized by March for Our Lives, a youth-driven organization first created by students who survived the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in 2018.

Technically it was more like "Stand along the side of a busy road and hold up signs for our lives" than an actual march, but I feel like we got the job done.
It was all ages, from old to young, and there were even a couple of elementary schoolers, including an adorable little girl with a sign that said, "Arms are for hugging." We were greeted with lots of enthusiastic honks and waves, which was very gratifying.
