Pence-world's final takedown of Trump's Jan. 6 bid to remain in power revealed in his lawyer's memo
Source: Politico
In the three-page document, attorney Greg Jacob concluded that if Pence were to embrace Trumps demand that he single-handedly block or delay the counting of electoral votes on Jan. 6, he would be breaking multiple provisions of the Electoral Count Act, the law that has governed the transfer of power since 1887.
Such a move, Jacob concluded, would assuredly fail in court. Or worse, he said, the courts would refuse to get involved and leave America in an unprecedented political crisis.
In that case, he said in the memo obtained by POLITICO and published for the first time, the Vice President would likely find himself in an isolated standoff against both houses of Congress with no neutral arbiter available to break the impasse.

Jacob will publicly testify at Thursday's Jan 6 Committee Hearing.

(19,204 posts)No Jeebus, either. No, Pence would never hold up in those conditions. Satan would have him in his clutches in a Mar-ma-lardo minute.

(12,423 posts)former VP Quayle made it quite clear to VP Pence that there was no wiggle room to his constitutional duties and what the Mango Menace was trying to force him to do was unconstitutional, so credit where credit is due, Quayle helped Pence make the right decision.

Screw right vs wrong...
It wasn't about having to stand up for principles.
It was about getting caught up where he'd have to prove he had some principles.

(1,687 posts)In what manner does election integrity need to be fixed?
It is thanks to Republicans that the electoral process that has functioned for 240 years with a few hiccups along the way has come under a cloud. Yes, the electoral college needs to be removed. But that in and of itself is separate from the attempted complete delegimization of democracy that has been aimed at the constitution by Republicans.
