Second, stronger earthquake recorded in two days in Georgia

Source: WGXA Macon

For the second time in two days, an earthquake has been recorded in Georgia.

The second earthquake, recorded at 4:05 a.m. Saturday, was centered in eastern Georgia near the city of Stillmore in Emanuel County.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake had a magnitude of 3.9 and was less than a half-mile under the earth's surface. That shallow depth likely allowed many people in the region to feel light shaking.

Hundreds of people have reported feeling the earthquake through the U.S.G.S. website.

How common is seismic activity in that area? the USGS website doesn't say.

Most quakes are felt in the northern part of the state. There are three fault lines that cross the state, and these two latest quakes look to be in the area of the Georgia fall line.

Fun fact - the Brevard fault is pretty much underneath the Chattahoochee River and Lake Lanier in the Atlanta area.

God’s a little sick of MTG using his name to spread hate and lies. Making some noise to get the attention of fake Jesus nuts.

As ga_girl said there are faults in the area mostly in north GA and western SC. They are ancient faults from the creation of Appalachian mountains eons ago, which at one time were as big as the Rockies. I lived in SC for 12 years and the strongest one we felt was a 3.9. The Charleston quake of 1886 was the largest to hit the eastern US in recorded history at 7.3, so the potential for a big one is there.
