January 6 committee unexpectedly adds new hearing for Tuesday
Source: CNN
(CNN)The committee investigating the Capitol Hill insurrection on January 6, 2021, has added a previously unexpected public hearing for Tuesday afternoon, the committee announced Monday. The panel has not revealed the hearing's topic.
The announcement came as a surprise to many as the committee had said it was not going to resume its hearings until mid-July. Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the committee's chairman, told reporters last week that the panel needed more time to go through the new documentary footage it received from documentarian Alex Holder, who possesses never-before-seen footage of Trump and his family, new information from the National Archives, and new tips coming in through the panel's tip line since the hearings started in order to move forward with its hearings
The committee did not reveal the witness list or topic but said it would "present recently obtained evidence and receive witness testimony. "Tuesday's hearing starts at 1 p.m. ET. It will be the panel's sixth hearing this month.
In its first five hearings, the committee laid out how former President Donald Trump knew he lost the 2020 presidential election but pressured former Vice President Mike Pence, state officials, and the Department of Justice to work to keep him in office anyway. Members on the committee previously laid out that its final two hearings would focus on the role domestic extremist groups played in attacking the Capitol on January 6 and would fill in the gaps of what Trump was doing as the violence at the Capitol unfolded.

(47,555 posts)Yes, the Supreme Court dominated the news right after the last congressional hearing and much of the evidence revealed got overshadowed by the Roe v. Wade decision. Admittedly and justifiably Roe was the biggest story of the day, but pushing aside the 1/6 hearing was unacceptable. 24 hour news channels should be able to report on more than one story at a time.
The American public has such a short attention span, the 1/6 hearings feel like a month ago already.

(47,555 posts)it is best to not turn on the TV. I take it that the war in Ukraine is over and all is well. It is shameful that the media can't find five minutes to update what is happening in Ukraine. How many hours a day do they need?
They repeat the same story over and over again all day long accompanied by numerous opinions, analysis, and predictions, which is basically a lot of people saying the same thing with slightly different wording.

(12,582 posts)Because its a threat to the security of the free world. If we let it go to the back burner people will lose interest & stop supporting UKR's fight against russia. And thats exactly what the Russians are counting on.

(47,555 posts)We have several huge stories right now and none of them should be put on the back burner. What cable news is doing is lazy and unprofessional. God help us if a major pop star dies!

Hopefully, they were able to obtain some information from the new documentary....

(47,555 posts)in the news at first and I expected the coverage to be sustained for at least a few days. Even the tabloids were sensationalizing it. "Explosive TV hearings expose betrayal, LIES, & treachery!"
Then the Supreme Court ruling took over the news cycle and the media let the hearings story die. Apparently, they can only report on one story at a time. This last minute unexpected hearing is a blessing, though I'll bet Trump isn't terribly pleased. Now lets hope that cable news can report on the hearings AND still keep the Roe v. Wade story! So much depends on it.

(16,469 posts)What Trump really wants, of course, is an equal amount of TV time, completely under HIS control, to fill up with all the lies and garbage he can cram into it.
Good luck to the ugly orange baboon with THAT!

(129,276 posts)since his film is supposed to air this summer and they showed some clips from it at the last hearing...
Also wonder if it could be Bill Stepien (45's campaign manager) who was supposed to testify at one of the earlier ones but couldn't because his wife went into labor. They ended up using clips from his videotaped depositions instead figuring that would suffice.

(1,539 posts). . . that the Committee wants to get out ahead of DOJ now that it appears DOJ is after some of the principals involved in planning Trump's coup?
