The attack in Highland Park was not the only shooting over a violent holiday weekend.

Why the fuck is this country content to live in a war zone of our own making?
Gun Violence Archive, a tracking project that defines mass shootings as those in which at least four people are killed or injured, has counted 309 so far this year.

(8,915 posts)how many times they mention, look at the gun violence in Chicago ...
I'm sick of hearing it.
They used it during the George Floyd murder and the protests that followed, whenever gun laws are talked about, even the tragedy in Highland Park today, the dog whistle is Chicago, even though HP is about 30 miles north of the city.
Yes it's a big time RW talking point.

And the NYT is anything but a RW rag.
I apologize that I don't follow Fox or any other RW sites to keep abreast of what drivel they spout.

(16,399 posts)I saw a clip of him ranting and clutching his pearls about how horrible Chicago supposedly is. He called it a hell hole.
Dude needs to remember that almost 2/3 of the population of Illinois is in the Chicgo metro area. He's going to alienate a lot of those folks talking that way.

(10,188 posts)Those sorts of gun massacres are not reported as human tragedies, like the epidemic of mass shootings in white America. They're covered as cautionary tales, to instill fear in whites of what will happen if "those people" are allowed out of their neighborhoods, and to create an urgent need to acquire even more guns to defend themselves.

(2,586 posts)Just because a concern is mentioned by RWers does NOT invalidate it -- context matters deeply.
The same thing that RWers might exploit as a dog whistle is often something progressives fail to address at our peril (in more than one sense in this case). If we fail to address them, then we cede urgent public concern ONLY to those who seek to exploit them for anti-progressive purposes

(5,692 posts)toughest gun laws have the highest shooting rates.
Let's just look at this weekend.
Chicago - tough laws, BUT is surrounded by state where getting a driver's license requires more work than a gun, especially in Gary, IN. Gary is half hour away on the Skyway. . .then there's WI and IA no more than two hours away.
SC - what laws?
WA - semi tough laws
VA - what laws?
NC - what laws?
TX - what laws?
NYC - tough laws until you get north of Interstate 84 (my part of NY)
So. . .we can see this "tough gun laws" crap is just that. . .crap!

"This is a gun country. It's crazy. We're the most armed country in world history and we're one of the least safest," Mayor Jim Kenney said after two police officers were shot in the area of the Ben Franklin Parkway during Fourth of July festivities. https://cbsloc.al/3AqMFd8

Have been trying to get his full statement from somewhere because he correctly ranted about the 2nd Amendment, the SCOTUS, and the PA State legislature that continues to overrule every gun-related ordinance the city has attempted over the years due to their "preemption" thing.

(7,017 posts)hundreds of police available to solve ALL the shootings that happen daily. I get it but it's too bad all shootings can't be solved with such urgency.
