2 key UK Cabinet ministers quit Boris Johnson's government
Source: AP
LONDON (AP) Two of Britains most senior Cabinet ministers have quit, a move that could spell the end of Prime Minister Boris Johnsons leadership after months of scandals.
Treasury chief Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned within minutes of each other. Javid said I can no longer continue in good conscience.
Johnson has been hit by allegations he failed to come clean about a lawmaker who was appointed to a senior position despite claims of sexual misconduct.
Sunak said the public rightly expect government to be conducted properly, competently and seriously. I recognize this may be my last ministerial job, but I believe these standards are worth fighting for and that is why I am resigning.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE.

Reuters
LONDON, July 5 (Reuters) - British Health Secretary Sajid Javid resigned on Tuesday, plunging Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government into crisis.
Javid said he had lost confidence in Johnson's ability to govern in the national interest after a series of scandals, saying he could "no longer continue in good conscience".
He said that many lawmakers and the public had lost confidence in Johnson's ability to govern in the national interest.
"I regret to say, however, that it is clear to me that this situation will not change under your leadership - and you have therefore lost my confidence too" Javid said in a letter to Johnson. Finance minister Rishi Sunak also resigned on Tuesday.

(11,795 posts)Being a US citizen abroad has been awful the last few months, years, decades...It's nice to focus on something else. But I saw the footage (I'm from NJ and have loads of friends/family in the Philly area), and it just looked horrifying.

(129,053 posts)(in London) for a few years before finally come back "home" (although I think one still works in the company's "global" unit). One of my sisters works for a foreign-owned company but almost all the employees are located all over the world and all communicate through the internet. Of course the challenge of that is coordinating meetings around all the different time zones.
We were fortunate here with that 4th of July event that no one was killed. If anything, literally thousands of people down there cleared out within about 15 - 20 minutes. And it's even more a shame because this was the first "big" summer "in person" (unrestricted) gathering since the pandemic and it was one of those rare July the 4th days where the humidity was actually low and the temps were reasonable. So it was a perfect night for a concert and fireworks.
