New report details missed chances to stop Uvalde shooting

Source: Associated Press

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — A police officer armed with a rifle watched the gunman in the Uvalde elementary school massacre walk toward the campus but did not fire while waiting for permission from a supervisor to shoot, according to a sweeping critique released Wednesday on the tactical response to the May tragedy.

Some of the 21 victims at Robb Elementary School, including 19 children, possibly “could have been saved” on May 24 had they received medical attention sooner while police waited more than an hour before breaching the fourth-grade classroom, a review by a training center at Texas State University for active shooter situations found.

The report is yet another damning assessment of how police failed to act on opportunities that might have saved lives in what became the deadliest school shooting in the U.S. since the slaughter at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012.

“A reasonable officer would have considered this an active situation and devised a plan to address the suspect,” read the report published by the university’s Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training program.

1. Well, ya know, if everyone just legally walks around with guns wherever they want to

on accounta the 2A ... how are the cops supposed to know that they can take the shot ... before the killings start?

I mean, when it's a non-black person with a gun, of course.

MAAAAAYBE if that WEREN'T legal, they'd feel a bit more justified taking out someone running onto school grounds with high-powered weapons on display, but since they ARE ... I guess, oops ... tough luck, children.

It's FREEDUMB!!!

would have been put down quick...and what happened to stop and detain with reasonable doubt that the shooters' weapon and shooter are benign?

3. Plain and simple - Abbott and the Police are quite culpable in this mass shooting

I don't see how more heat isn't being put on them. Abbott should not be placating anyone on this but rather receiving the harshest of criticism

9. I think it is important, after the NRA and all their friends managed to persuade the nation

that "all we need is more good guys with guns," we should pointedly study what happened at Uvalde and list in minute detail every singly itty bitty reason the "good guys with guns" failed utterly to save those children from a young White man with an AR-15. Pound them with that until they can't stand it anymore, that anybody with an AR-15 can kill great deal more people than the typical "Islamic jihadist." It's so much easier for a young White male to escape the authorities attention compared to someone from middle Eastern Country with a beard and some traditional clothing. Gee, he just goes to the local gun store and buys a gun. Maybe his conservative Dad had to give him permission because he's not quite 21. He innocently climbs to the top of a building along the July 4 parade route and waits. He probably has a bottle of water. And then it's like he's on the shooting range or the video game again, just the people are a little smaller. And there seem to be a lot of mothers and their children, but the AR-15 doesn't care.

13. There was a meme going around, and I saw it posted

It said that the father who showed up at the school with a shotgun put a stop to everything. And that, the meme claims, proves the "good guy with a gun" scenario.

People believe this. They think that's what happened.
