U.S. Secret Service director James Murray leaving agency
Source: Washington Post
U.S. Secret Service director James Murray is stepping down from his job at the head of the storied protective service, according to a statement issued by the agency Thursday. Murray, who has held the job since 2019, has been looking to retire for some time and plans take a job in the private sector, according to a senior Department of Homeland Security official with knowledge of his decision.
He has accepted a top security job with the California-based social media company Snapchat, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to share internal details. Murray, a 27-year veteran of the Secret Service, served in various top roles at the agency before he was named director in May 2019. His last day will be July 30, according to the statement. DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that under Murrays leadership the agency has reinforced its stature as the preeminent protective agency in the world and has increased in sophistication and scope its investigative capabilities.
I have benefited tremendously from the opportunity to rely on Director Murray as a trusted advisor and highly regarded leader in the Department of Homeland Security," Mayorkas said in a statement. A statement from the Secret Service said Murray helped the agency navigate the unique challenges presented by the historic COVID-19 pandemic, while continuing to perform its integrated mission of providing protection to senior elected leaders and investigating crimes targeting our financial infrastructure.
The Secret Service, best known for protecting current and former presidents and their families, has endured multiple controversies over the past decade, including a prostitution scandal, White House security missteps during the Obama administration and allegations of politicization under President Donald Trump. In recent weeks, its agents have become central characters in the House Jan. 6 legislative committee investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol.

(19,565 posts)Of course the timing feels suspect with Ms Hutchinson's recent testimony.
Then there's the fact he was installed by Trump during his DHS purge.
Then he's going to Snapchat? Like that's a natural evolution in his career?

(19,565 posts)Who leaves such a lifetime career in the secret service for a private sector job at Snapchat? Snapchat?! Not a single person ever before now. Not one. There's nothing like this before. It's interesting.
Put a pin in this, it's not close to done. There's more layers to this onion than just his obvious resignation.

(297,323 posts)did to keep his job is much more curious.

Snapchat? Well, I suppose all big companies do need security. So maybe Snapchat is going to be doing some major restructuring.
But, seriously.
Someone is running before the poo hits the wind turbines. Doesnt he realize you can subpoena former employees??
I have no idea of his motives or career moves. But if he wanted to speak out against Trump or was upset about the culture at the Secret Service, he'd have more freedom to make those kinds of complaints from the outside than from the inside.

(8,835 posts)bail out as director of FBI just after 9/11?????? Seems he ignored many Arizona Agents reporting there were mid eastern men learning how to fly airliners, but not interested in takeoffs and landings????????????
I may be getting forgetful in my old age...............

(129,132 posts)but most don't stay the full time. HOWEVER as a note, Freeh left before 9/11 and then Robert Mueller was brought in by Shrub literally a week before 9/11.
Later, Obama was able to get Congress to agree to an extension for Mueller, who not only served for 10 years (after Freeh left) but for an additional couple years before Comey was brought in.

(8,835 posts)for helping my old memory.
So he bailed just before 9/11!
Do you recall if him retiring was before or after receiving all the letters from the FBI Agents in Arizona re the mid eastern pilots in training to fly airliners????????
It seems there was a large amount of publicity regarding that at the time..............

(129,132 posts)It's unclear about the timing of Freeh's knowledge vs Mueller but ahead of it, there seemed to have been no red flags raised including by the guy who still guilts out about doing the training (in Florida) - https://www.wptv.com/news/region-c-palm-beach-county/former-florida-resident-unknowingly-trained-9-11-terrorists
And of course doing this flight training in Fl in 2001 was probably the biggest red flag because, we all know who the governor was at the time!
DENVERPOPS
(8,835 posts)but the warnings that I was talking about that were published for weeks after 9/11 were coming out of FBI agents in Arizona, who were tipped off by the instructors and people that owned the private flight training schools for airline pilots in Arizona. The owners repeatedly warned the local FBI agents about the fact that these mid eastern pilot students were only interested in flying commercial jet liners, and not the least bit interested in take off's and landings. There was a female FBI agent as well as other agents, who repeatedly sent warnings to Washington before 9/11 and heard nothing back......This was in the months preceding 9/11...........
BTW: it was also mentioned in other articles at that time that coincidentally, the Republican PNAC document from 1997 gave their goals for the future and mentioned that unless there was some major event like Pearl Harbor, it would take a great deal longer to get their agenda for the new century ahead shoved through. I remember looking up the public PNAC document, and sure enough, that is what was said somewhere in the many pages of the document......
As with everything these past 20+ years, there is probably tons that we don't know, and maybe alot of it, we don't want to know....
BumRushDaShow
(129,132 posts)that would have been on Mueller then and apparently there were some warnings that were evemtually dismissed, which frustrated then-Senator Bob Graham (D-FL) who was relentlessly pursuing info on what happened all the way up until he was out of office. However the article did delve into the Saudi family in Sarasota, FL that suddenly packed up and left in a hurry a few weeks before. I don't know if that is the same family (or perhaps related to them) that was mentioned who had ties to the Sauds, and who managed to flee out of Boston when the ground stop had been announced.
And with respect to PNAC - it seems the neocons have been summarily shoved aside. The doc is still floating around out there (I had saved a copy way back and there is a PDF transcription of it - plus the html version here).
At this point with the way the geopolitical alliances have had seismic shifts, the concepts of PNAC are now obsolete!
