Casey Supports Reforming Filibuster To Pass Abortion Protections
Source: TPM
Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), son of the famous anti-abortion governor whose name adorns Casey v. Planned Parenthood, will support reforming the filibuster to pass abortion protections.
He believes the rule should be changed for a number of issues and this is one of them, Casey press secretary Natalie Adams told TPM.
Casey has evolved significantly on abortion, in May announcing that hed vote for a bill to codify protections soon after the draft Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade leaked.

Let me be clear: If it comes down to protecting the filibuster or protecting a womans right to choose, there should be no question that I will vote to protect a womans right to choose, she said in a statement.

(7,530 posts)But listening to an NPR show today made me wonder if we need to disentangle and re-define the language surrounding "abortion" for legal and medical purposes and so doctors aren't on the hot plate for saving lives.
Someone who miscarries a fetus and needs it removed isn't aborting a pregnancy; they are removing unviable dead tissue that could potentially harm or kill them. It's medically called an "abortion" but really isn't.
Someone who receives surgery to prevent an ectopic pregnancy from killing them most often never intended to abort their pregnancy; they are receiving life-saving care for an unviable fetus.
While I don't suggest giving ground in the fight, would it make more sense to terminologically separate an elective abortion from medically necessary miscarriage care?

(5,256 posts)This is about women being allowed to control their own bodies and lives. Restrictions that don't make room for rape, incest, or the life of the mother are the most extreme form of a highly extreme anti-choice doctrine, but that doesn't mean that we should limit our efforts to combating only those most fanatical restrictions.
