Ukraine forces finally seeing impact of western arms, says Zelenskiy

Source: The Guardian

Ukrainian forces are finally seeing the impact of western weapons on the frontlines of the war with Russia, Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said.

Experts say while western equipment has been crucial for pushing back Russian forces, the west will need to scale up its supplies, and even mobilise its own defence industries, if it wants to avoid a war of attrition that Ukraine could lose.

During his nightly TV address, Zelenskiy said that thanks to western supplies, Ukrainian forces were advancing in two directions in the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions on Ukraine’s southern front and dealing blows to Russia by hitting some of its logistics warehouses.

“Finally, [Ukraine] feels that western artillery is working very powerfully,” he said, adding that it had “inflicted very noticeable blows on warehouses and other points that are important for [Russia’s] logistics.” He said the Ukrainian strikes had “significantly reduced the offensive potential of the Russian army”.

Vladimir Putin hit back, saying that if the west wanted to defeat Russia on the battlefield, it was welcome to try.

Wonderful news but as stated in the article, the Ukrainians are not able to effectively go on the offense. They need quantities of arms to push the Russians out of Ukraine.

mentioned to me over, the past 3 weeks, that they think we should be spending more on the homeless in the US and the needs here as opposed to Ukraine. Has any one else noticed this from fellow Dems?

One has nothing to do with the other.

If we aren't spending on certain things it's not becsuse of other things we are spending on.

And some local and state govts DO spend on homeless. In fact it's usually done more at state level.

Republicans oppose many programs which we DO have money for.

And why not help Ukraine ? Is the person an isolationist ? Do they sympathize with Russia ? Are they just stupid ?

the republiCons oppose spending for both the homeless and Ukraine, but they do advocate tax cuts (spending) for billionaires and huge corporations.

Most Democrats I believe, would advocate spending for the homeless and Ukraine. We can and must do both.

All of the suggestions are better than mine, which was to say nothing because I don't know how to respond. I usually think of responses long after the time I needed them. Now I know what to say if a third friend says the same thing. Thanks!!!!!

...of binary thinking.

We spent trillions on Iraq and Afghanistan, while watching our bridges crumble. Many are resigned that Putin is going to keep what he got and may get more. So all that aid seems like a waste of our money. And many keep hammering that the Baltics are next, when everyone knows they are not. It undermines our arguments. After Ukraine and Belarus, its yesterdays news.

What is next, are a number of African, South East Asia, South and Central America nations. And its not just your fellow Dem's, cracks are forming in Europe and even to an extent, in Ukraine.

Sorry to be a downer.
