White House: Iran set to deliver armed drones to Russia
Source: Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) The White House on Monday said it believes Russia is turning to Iran to provide it with hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles, including weapons-capable drones, for use in its ongoing war in Ukraine.
U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said it was unclear whether Iran had already provided any of the unmanned systems to Russia, but said the U.S. has information that indicates Iran is preparing to train Russian forces to use them as soon as this month.
Our information indicates that the Iranian government is preparing to provide Russia with up to several hundred UAVs, including weapons-capable UAVs on an expedited timeline, he told reporters Monday.
Sullivan said it was proof the Russias overwhelming bombardments in Ukraine, which have led it to consolidate gains in the countrys east in recent weeks, was coming at a cost to the sustainment of its own weapons.

(32,787 posts)Since receiving the longer range HIMARS they have targeted 5 depots inside Russia in and the Donbas. No doubt they are getting intel from the Brits and the US as to exact locations.

(395 posts)The Russians have resorted to using one of their most sophisticated anti-aircraft missles to strike ground targets because they are running out of ground attack missles. Now they are going to try using drones they've never trained with. Will it help them? Yes for a while until Ukraine (with US and UK intel) figures out how to defeat them. It also helps us because now we get operational info on how to take them out.
This is not going to end well for Russia and the longer they push this war the worse it gets. If they are going to Iran then the Chinese, Indians and Turkey have turned them down.

(2,965 posts)Iran is under some fairly restrictive sanctions. Their drone supply is limited, and they won't be able to supply Russia with drones for very long. They'll run out and will have a hard time making more at a fast enough rate for them to remain a threat for very long.
Also, the fact that Russia is buying weapons from such a minor player in the arms supply business is a sign that Russia is pretty weak militarily. It would be like France buying weapons from Gambia.
Lastly, as jgmiller said above, we'll get great intel on these things once they're used in combat in Ukraine and we'll be able to defend against them a whole lot better in the future.
