Biden nominates 5 new judges, but not Republican abortion opponent

July 12 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday nominated five new federal judges, but did not at this time move forward with a plan opposed by a growing number of Democrats and progressives to appoint a Republican abortion opponent to a judgeship in Kentucky.
The latest nominees include Cindy Chung, a prosecutor Biden previously picked to serve as the U.S. attorney for Pittsburgh and is now seeking to make the first Asian American ever on the Philadelphia-based the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
Biden also named four nominees for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, including two state court judges in Philadelphia who previously worked as public defenders representing indigent defendants.
Those two nominees are Judges Mia Perez and Kai Scott. The other two nominees are Kelley Hodge, a partner at the law firm Fox Rothschild, and John Murphy, a partner at Baker & Hostetler.

(18,636 posts)I still believe there's a deal for McConnell to drop the filibusters on Biden's picks, both in cabinet positions and federal judgeship's. Any good prosecutor would make sure the defendant is going to follow through as promised in a plea bargain before passing sentence.
By the same token, these judges are for life, so Mitch could renege on his agreement and still keep his appointed judge. I don't trust him and neither does the president.
I can hear McConnell saying: "I didn't mean I wouldn't block this judge" "He/she is way too liberal".

(3,167 posts)And you know why? Because of McConnell's obstructionism. If that hadn't happened, Obama would have not been able to appoint ANYONE during his last term.

(7,850 posts)this seems kind of deja vu...Mitch would not allow Merrick Garland"s nomination to come to the floor...Mitch had Biden's nod he would nominate his anti-choice guy..that was before the vile court decimated Roe v Wade..oops...and now this abortion opponent's almost-nomination is hanging in the air...to bad

(24,330 posts)As I've written in other places (twice in this thread) the seat is held by Judge Karen Kaye Caldwell (Bush appointee) and she won't retire until her successor is approved and she has said it has to be Meredith

Hes getting some heat about obstructing new legislation too.
Be great if his strangle hold on power starts to slowly erode.

(24,330 posts)It's a federal judge position in Eastern Kentucky that McConnell wants Meredith to get
The catch in all of this, and may be why Biden agreed (if he did) is that the seat is held by Karen Kaye Caldwell and she has said she will not retire until the nomination for the seat has cleared and she wants it to be Meredith
So, it will either by Meredith, or Caldwell (a Bush appointee) for the foreseeable future

(24,330 posts)My understanding is that he is to be appointed to the seat held by Karen Kaye Caldwell
I know she went on Senior Status end of June, and that she has conditioned her leaving on Meredith being appointed to her position.
This doesn't sound like any of these appointments are about that particular seat

(42,714 posts)If she had gone on senior status, the seat would be vacant and she couldn't hold up an appointment.

(5,844 posts)I REALLY FUCKING HOPE he isn't planning to wait until all the outrage dies down in order to sneak in this nomination. Because we women are still outraged and he has not done ENOUGH.
