Trump Tried to Contact Jan. 6 Witness, Liz Cheney Reveals
Source: The Daily Beast
Former President Donald Trump tried to call a witness set to appear before the House Jan. 6 Committee, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) revealed in a bombshell statement at the end of Tuesdays hearing.
Trump allegedly called the witness, whose identity has not been revealed, following the committees last hearing, Cheney said. The witness did not pick up Trumps call, instead referring it to their lawyer, who referred it to the committee. The incident has been referred to the Department of Justice, Cheney added.
We will take any effort to influence witness testimony very seriously, Cheney said.
This is a developing story.

(2,018 posts)You're looking for someone who could recognize Twittler's number and choose to not answer it, probably someone with that number in their Contacts. So, a witness on the list we haven't heard from yet, and who is super close to Twittler.
Also, I'll put money on a voice mail. Cheney said "declined to answer or respond to." She is very careful in what she says, and there is not a lot of reason to use this language unless there was a message (voice or text) to respond to with a callback.

(14,764 posts)I took it to mean he wanted the committee to call a specific witness he wanted them to hear from.
Now I see he called someone who was already scheduled to testify.
And guess what? Even if he did pardon himself, it wouldn't protect him now......
So what's doj's excuse gonna be now?

(1,189 posts)Is attempting to contact a witness a crime?
I wish the witness would have taken the call from Trump so he/she could testify to what Trump said. Unfortunately, when it comes to criminality, I don't see how DOJ can make a case based only on an attempt by Trump to contact a witness.
Justice matters.

moniss
(4,263 posts)a cynical legal strategy on the part of the Orange Ruski. If he now commits some crimes and is charged he may try to get a deal with DOJ where he pleads guilty to these lesser crimes as long as they don't charge him for the coup. He will probably also agree to testify against Flynn, Powell, Ghouliani, Meadows and Stone.

(14,061 posts)Trump will probably try to claim he didnt know the person was planning to testify. Bullshit. Didnt Cassidy Hutchison get a similar communication?
Damn, DOJ. This is being handed to you on the proverbial silver platter.

(32,645 posts)... that was Mark Meadows. He's not doing those calls any more.
Now Chump has to do his own witness tampering, and it's not going too well.

But there are many, many more criminals who need to be gathered up.

(36,100 posts)Witness tampering is an easy dunk for the DOJ.
They also know that the American public knows. So there is DOJ integrity to live up to.
The reason I say you can't say it will be ignored is that the DOJ's done a shitton of work already.

(3,629 posts)...screening their calls. The "refused the call, referred it to their attorney" thing doesn't sound like caller ID being recognized or a voicemail being left. To me that most likely suggests someone in political office.
