Garland: 'justice without fear or favor' will guide decision on charging Trump
Source: The Guardian
The US attorney general, Merrick Garland, said he would pursue justice without fear or favor when it comes to weighing political sensitivities around his decision on whether to charge Donald Trump with crimes related to the Capitol attack and his attempt to overturn the 2020 election.
NBC released a clip of its eagerly awaited interview with Garland on Tuesday. The full interview was due to broadcast in the evening.

The Department of Justice is itself investigating Trumps election subversion efforts.
The House January 6 committee could make a criminal referral. Whether it should, or will, and whether it has presented sufficient evidence to do so, is a matter of extensive debate around the US and on the committee itself.

(38,547 posts)I believe that now more than ever. He will decline to prosecute - hiding behind political considerations. "Too close to an election."
Well, the election that it's "too close to" is not an election in which Trump will be running. The midterms will be thrown to the GOP by a timid and underachieving DOJ. Then what could possibly happen to any 1/6 traitor? Not much.
I hope some DU Garland fans can prove me wrong.

(6,570 posts)that there was no proof that he actually participated in organizing the coup attempt. No emails, or something like that. Well, I think that standing at the podium and urging armed predators to stroll right into the Capitol to disrupt the transfer of power is pretty participatory. I'll take it for 1,000, Jay. And so will a Grand Jury! There's no denying that this Orange Turd tried to overthrow our Government.
SEDITIOUS TRAITOR. That's what he is. And, people cried over Ashli Babbitt getting shot dead (which was a HORRIBLE thing that happened), but they are planning a hot Civil War which will get a whole hell of a lot of us killed. Them included. All for this unbearable asshole who wants to be a King!

(100,107 posts)And I hate to say that word but I seriously think that's where they are heading. They love Victor Orban because he talks that kind of game and isn't afraid of murdering people. I'm legitimately scared of the direction that Fox News and Christian conservatives are taking this country.
Seriously they'd love to bring out the gas chambers for Trump's political opponents if they could. Hell they're actively salivating over the idea of public executions and martial law. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that the MAGAs would go full Hitler if given a second term. And there would be no one to stop them either. All to "save the children" from "predators and groomers and sex traffickers". I can't even.

(6,570 posts)The only reason Trump didn't murder someone (if he didn't) is because the first time around, it wasn't seemly. As soon as the second term kicks in, he will not be restrained.
He should know, however, that we will FIGHT.

(6,570 posts)"The panel has made referrals for Trump aides. Steve Bannon was convicted of criminal contempt of Congress and faces jail time. Peter Navarro has been charged. Dan Scavino and Mark Meadows were referred, the DoJ then deciding not to act."
Remind me again why DOJ decided not to prosecute Scavino and Meadows?
Garland is taking a lot of heat recently, which suddenly prompts him to come out with these reassurances. I'm not particularly reassured.
What was the meaning of that info that was dropped about a GJ testimony from that guy on Friday? People were cooing about, oh, that means there is a GJ open on Trump! And, Garland speaks about their own investigation. What's all that mean in the light?
Are you telling me that the J6 Committee has NOT made a criminal referral of Donald Trump??
There's no hope here. We are going to be skewered by fascists who are looking to destroy our government and way of life. I am not looking forward to this.
Donald Trump thrives on chaos and oppression. If he gets reelected, he will waste no time with Executive Orders to become a full fledged dictator. If we do not overcome the Republican Party, they will tear up the Constitution and destroy us.
I just don't want to hear any more from Garland. He's making things worse. "I stand for Truth, Justice, and the American Way." BS on a platter. For G-d's sake, do something! Getting Bannon on a 30-day jail sentence is not gonna do it!
Where is the freaking Democratic Party?? I see lots and lots of horrible, cringeworthy Repub ads promoting their despicable ideas, but NO DEMOCRATIC ads, no nothing. No wonder people are upset.
So, they aren't going to prosecute Trump? Oh, he didn't say they weren't? Well, I'll believe that when they do it.
People, we MUST, MUST, MUST win at Midterms. The Orange Turd is definitely going to run--they made a gold statue of him!--and we will be in trouble if he does. He will destroy our country.
And, FUCK OFF, BANNON. FOAD. You take your 4,000 shock troops and shove them up your ass.
Sorry, Ma. Having a bad, bad day.

(29,289 posts)Multiple prosecutors digging down into details specifically about TFG means, at the very least, that Garland is directing resources to find out if the ogre is prosecutable
I do wonder if his conservatism/sense of political propriety (i.e., reputational concern) restrained him for too long, only to be shaken into action by the stark malfeasance revealed by the J6 Committee. That report about DOJ requesting the J6 Committees evidence added to this skepticism, but its equally plausible that DOJ was already knee-deep in their own investigation and wanted to supplement it clearly the J6 committee had evidence that DOJ didnt have, and wanted.

Why step out in public twice in the last week to beat your chest about how nobodys above the law?
Why not be silent, do your work, then drop your decision?
Im getting the uneasy feeling we might be getting played.
