Matt Gaetz Among 20 Republicans Who Voted Against Human Trafficking Bill

Source: Newsweek

The House overwhelmingly passed a bipartisan bill to support human trafficking victims on Tuesday, with a strong vote of 401-20 backed by both Democratic and Republican Representatives.

Among the 20 Republicans who voted against re-authorizing the Frederick Douglass Trafficking Victims Prevention & Protection Reauthorization Act of 2022—legislation that supports programs preventing human trafficking and supporting its victims—was Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, who's currently under federal investigation for the alleged sex trafficking of a 17-year-old girl.

While all House's Democrats but one who abstained and 183 Republicans voted in favor of the bill, these 20 Republicans voted against it:

Brian Babin of Texas
Andy Biggs of Arizona
Lauren Boebert of Colorado
Mo Brooks of Alabama
Ken Buck of Colorado
Andrew Clyde of Georgia
Matt Gaetz of Florida
Louis Gohmert of Texas
Paul Gosar of Arizona
Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia
Andy Harris of Maryland
Jody Hice of Georgia
Thomas Massie of Kentucky
Thomas M. McClintock of California
Mary Miller of Illinois
Troy Nehls of Texas
Ralph Norman of South Carolina
Scott Perry of Pennsylvania
Chip Roy of Texas
Van Taylor of Texas

As far as I know, Mike has never (or exceedingly rarely) voted against the Dem leadership.

The sponsor of the this piece of legislation is Rep. Christopher H. Smith. Republican from New Jersey.
So, yes. They voted no on a bill whose sponsor was from their own party

To be fair, I understand Gaetz's vote of no, his background and preferences being what they are

Everything was nay
I think it was just them being them
Although with Gaetz, if they passed the bill, it might make it more difficult and dangerous to engage in his special activity

No big surprises in that list, though it is incomprehensible why anyone voted "nay" on such a bill. Well, it is possible some didn't even understand what the bill was about. Today's republican politicians aren't particularly the brightest people. And of course Matt Gaetz. I love that his name is in the headline!

...must give them all badge of honor! Yet, given House Republiklan solidarity...surprised that only 20 voted no. Could it be a break from racist extremists in the Republican party?

Now, let's see if bill gets support from any republiklan senate members and course support from the "two Dems" as Biden referred to them at some press conference awhile back, although minus the air quotes bc Pres. Biden is much nicer than I am when it comes to those two.

between parties. But there also should be topics that have universal support, regardless of party affiliation, and Human Trafficking should certainly be one of them.

That list of R's objecting to this legislation should all be called out in the media for being obvious obstructionists. And as another poster mentioned, they each should be asked to justify their "no" vote in front of the cameras with their answers plastered all over the media.

I can think of no reason why anyone should have a problem with this type of legislation.

Not a surprise, and I hope their Democratic opponents exploit this hypocrisy to their full advantage in future election campaigns.
